Greetings On-Line Family:

Miami Carnival is approximately 11 days away, and while anxiously preparing for our anticipated annual getaway to this lovely city earlier this week; a friend called on Monday morning with some dreadful news.  The CEO of Miami Carnival - Mr. Selman V. Lewis died on Monday 9/29/08 after suffering a heart attack a week earlier.

Mr. Selman Lewis to me from our meetings seemed to be a very nice and brilliant man - one who was definitely “on top of his game.”  It was evident he loved his culture and especially loved Carnival with a passion.  Therefore, he made a solid commitment to expose his culture in the city he seemed to love so dearly (Miami).  As with many Carnivals, the one I was a part of (DC Caribbean Carnival, Inc.) we would look to Mr. Lewis for guidance from time to time, and followed in his footsteps so that our Carnival would develop into a major success as Mr. Lewis’s Miami     Carnival.

One thing that will remain in my mind about Mr. Lewis is the lovely comments he freely shared with many of my colleagues about me; my commitment; and most importantly about my work while I was a part of the DC Carnival board.  I very much appreciated those lovely comments and will never forget them.

This gentleman certainly worked very hard throughout these past 24 years, along with his dedicated team (Miami Carnival Inc. Board of Directors.)  They have undoubtedly done an excellent job with the growth and success of their Miami Carnival.

Mr. Selman Lewis was indeed a dear man and will forever stay in our hearts and minds.  He will surely be missed, not only by his family and friends, but by many. We at Arious send our sincerest condolences to his family, friends and the Miami Carnival Board of Directors.

MiamiCarnival08_Poster_C[1].jpg (81445 bytes)PLEASE NOTE: Miami Carnival will proceed as planned, exactly as Mr. Lewis would want it.  It will take place on Sunday, October 12th, 2008, at Miami Bicentennial Park in Downtown Miami.  Click on the following picture to learn all the details.

In closing, the Lewis family and extended family (Miami Carnival Inc. Board of Directors) released the following joint statement:

“…Selman’s wife, sons and family have asked us to relay their deepest appreciation for the many, many phone calls, emails and messages which continue to be received from around the world.

Please remember Selman by making a contribution to the Selman Lewis Memorial Scholarship Fund.  Checks payable to the fund may be mailed to Miami Carnival, Inc., 18426 NW 2nd Avenue, Suite 335, Miami, Florida 33169.

In a final tribute to this brillian and accomplished man, and in recognition of his dedication to and passion for Carnival, the 2008 Miami Carnival will be the ultimate celebration of Selman’s life and accomplishments.

Eternal rest grant unto him.  May he rest in peace!...”

Below you will find an official Press Release from Miami Carnival, Inc. announcing the passing of Mr. Lewis, as well as details on his life and his accomplishments.  Additionally, you will find the details regarding his funeral arrangements.

Selman Lewis, CEO of Miami Carnival Committee Inc., Dies at Age 60

Miami, FL-September 30, 2008- Selman Lewis, Chief Executive Officer of the Miami Carnival Inc., died on Monday, September 29, 2008 at Aventura Hospital, Aventura, FL.  The following is a statement from his family and the Board of Directors of Miami Carnival, Inc.

Selman Vincent Lewis-August 4, 1948- September 29, 2008

Selman’s life began 60 years ago in Trinidad. He attended Belmont Intermediate School. As a youngster he played mas in Kiddies Carnival. He continued to play mas every year in Trinidad and Tobago. Selman was a loyal member of Peter Minshall’s band for many years and in recent years with Brian McFarlane “mas band”.

Selman migrated to New York in 1969. He attended Pace University and aviation school in New York. Selman was awarded a government scholarship from the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago and after graduating with a Bachelor's Degree; he returned to Trinidad & Tobago to work for the Government in various Ministries, including a posting as a Foreign Service Diplomat with a portfolio, which included tourism and international trade.

In 1980, Selman started working for the Trinidad and Tobago Tourist Board in Miami.

He formed Mega Marketing Inc. in 1988. As a tourism and marketing professional, Selman also played a role in building Miami as a destination brand within the Caribbean Diaspora. Selman has had Board responsibilities with numerous front-line organizations nationally and internationally and has received many awards for his management, marketing and leadership abilities.

“Selman Lewis offered his marketing acumen in making Miami a premier destination brand.  His contribution to our region's cultural tourism is unquestioned," said Bill Talbert, President, Greater Miami Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

Selman’s love and passion for Carnival continued when he became the guiding force behind Miami Carnival in 1990. He was the Chief Executive Officer of Miami Carnival Inc. and as such was responsible for the execution of the annual Miami Carnival, which is the third-largest Caribbean Carnival in North America. He is also the President of China Mas Group, the most outstanding mas band in Miami Carnival, which has won the "Band of the Year" title for seven consecutive years.  In addition to Miami Carnival, Selman started the era of the Coconut Grove Convention Center Carnival party, hiring 5 music bands for two nights in Miami. An innovator, possessing an immensely creative mind, Selman truly laid the foundation for the success and growth of the Miami Carnival celebration.

“Always and to the end, Selman was the icon of knowledge behind Miami Carnival. He worked on the 24th Annual Miami Carnival until the day he went into the hospital. He will be profoundly missed by those whose lives he touched, but he leaves us with extraordinary inspiration to draw upon this Miami Carnival season”, states the Miami Carnival Inc., board members.

"We are saddened at the loss of Selman Lewis.  He was a community pillar who provided leadership to the important cultural institution of Caribbean Carnival in South Florida”. Miami-Dade County, Commissioner Dennis Moss, District 9 .

"Within in the last few months, a number of personalities from the Trinidad and Tobago community in South Florida have died. The Trinidad and Tobago Consulate General extends its deepest condolences to Selman's family on this very sad occasion” states Mr. Gerald Greene, Consul General of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

Selman is survived by his wife Janet, two sons Christopher and Adrian, daughter-in-law Jerry, grandchildren Kai and Terrick and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made payable to the Selman Lewis Memorial Scholarship Fund. Mail to Miami Carnival office at 18425 NW 2nd Ave, Suite 335, Miami, Fl 33169.

 Devastating  FinanciaCrisis Continues!

bailoutwallstreetburning.jpg (48363 bytes)  Regarding the economy and the major financial meltdown, it has been a week from hell for America as this crisis continues.  Needless-to-say, the stock market has been on a serious “roller coaster”, but as I think about it maybe roller coaster is not the right word to describe it, because it has been down more than it has been up.

(1) The lawmakers in the House with all their party bickering and fighting did not pass the “Bailout Bill” earlier this week.  It was rejected 228-205

(2) The bill being rejected caused the "Dow" to drop drastically to about 777 points.  Normally to a gambler who plays slots 777 means you've won a Jackpot, obviously not in this case!!!

(3) Another big financial institution Wochovia Bank who has been enduring major financial trouble was bought out by CitiGroup.

(4) The "Dow" and "Nasdaq" (Wall Street) continued falling all week.

(5) After revising the "Financial Rescue Plan" (the $700 billion bailout bill), the Senate passed it 74-25.  However, instead of $700 billion, another $150 billion was added to it (in the past 3 days,) making it a total of $850 billion that the Senate passed.  Additionally, it has been reported that this $150 billion dollar increase are for "pet projects" and unnecessary tax breaks for big businesses.  Which is very distressing.

(6) The House will have an opportunity to vote on the revised bill with this $150 billion increase on Friday, October 3rd (the bill they voted against on Monday.)

Listening to the American people on talk shows and the mainstream media, the American people really does not want this bill to pass.  Folks are saying "Let Wall Street Bail out itself, and no one is bailing us (the American people) out".

Meanwhile the stock market keeps falling drastically, and many businesses and Americans are losing money.

Incidentally, Todd and I faced our first lost in the stock market, because one of the stocks we purchased plunged drastically.  It is a minor loss...but still a lost.  We can just imagine how people are feeling whose stocks were really in the high figures (worth hundreds of dollars), and now has plummeted.

Obviously, something must be done soon to stabilize this economy and bring America back on to its feet.  Whatever it takes, I believe it must be done.

US Presidential Election - November 4, 2008

The debates!  They were quite entertaining.  I understand from many polls Senator Barack Obama won the 1st Presidential debate that took place on Friday, September 26th.  How exciting!!!  However, I am very interested in finding out your thoughts on both debates: the Presidential debate, and the October 2nd Vice Presidential debate.

For me now-a-days (and probably for most Americans and residents of the United States,) the economy and the overall state of America is what I am very concerned about.  Therefore, the first 40 minutes of the Presidential debate fascinated me.  Indeed it is very important to learn about the candidates ideas regarding foreign policy, but for me the immediate devastating financial crisis is what I feel need to be addressed.  Never-the-less, I learned tons about the many issues regarding foreign policy as they debated for the full 90 minutes.  Which was a major eye-opener for me.

On a personal note though, I found Senator McCain (1) evidentially lacked respect for Senator Obama; (2) was extremely contemptuous and condescending; and (3) was adamant about not looking directly at Senator Obama when addressing him as instructed by the host Tom Lehrer.  Additionally, the lengthy heated debate on the war in Iraq and the surge in 2007 made me sick, because Senator McCain undoubtedly has no intention of bringing the troops home from a war that clearly should not have been fought; at least not in Iraq.  Even though he says he honors their service, he feels they should stay in Iraq and continue fighting.  For what?  I don’t know, when the real target is located in Afghanistan.  He obviously feels our sons, daughters and loved ones should stay in Iraq to fight, instead of coming home or even being sent to eliminate the “root of the problem based in Afghanistan.

So many lives have been lost in Iraq, when the real war or real target should have been to eliminate the “root of the problem” that is based in Afghanistan.  After hearing McCain, I still feel the Iraq war was stupid and a mistake.

The Vice Presidential Debate was excellent.  Senator Biden debated to my expectation and certainly didn't disappoint me.  He was quite good!

To me, Sarah Palin was kinda impressive.  It's obvious her week's worth of preparation and "cramming" somewhat paid off.  It's clear she absolutely did what she had to do to try and reinvigorate her party, gain the folks who are independents, change the uncertain way folks began feeling about her due to her disastrous interviews this past week, and most importantly proved that she is knowledgeable and is a good speaker.

Clearly, she was very vague and unclear when answering many questions.  Actually, she  avoided and "straight up" didn't answering several questions.  For one she refused to answer the question on the deregulation issue.  She pretty much "brushed off" answering, or was very vague while addressing the consumer debt, mortgage and financial crisis and was unclear when addressing civil rights for Gay couples.  Most interestingly when she was given the chance to defend her running mate Senator McCain, she stated she preferred to talk directly to the American people about her own track record.

This thing about stretching the Vice Presidential duties that Sarah Palin addressed surprised me a bit.

However, overall it ran smoothly, and was very interesting.  I was still not convinced, nor am I "feeling" the Republicans on their Maverick statement, and on their policy on the War in Iraq and Afghanistan, the economy, and most importantly their absurd health care plan.  These are the issues that are very important to me, and still they have not answered my questions.  I only "get" that they want to fight, dictate and continue with war...war...war!!!

The 2nd Presidential Debate is scheduled to take place on October 7th, 2008 @ Belmont University in Nashville, and the next one is scheduled to take place on October 15, 2008 in New York.

VoteForChangepic.jpg (21891 bytes)You must keep in mind that it is absolutely important for us to vote in this upcoming election.  Our voices must definitely be heard through this voting process, and to do so we all must be registered to vote prior to this important day.

The voter registration according to the Democrat party continues to reach unbelievable highs in  many competitive and "battleground" states (Nevada, New Hampshire, Iowa, Colorado, Virginia and Florida.)  I am glad to know and share with you that people all across America definitely intends to participating in this years' election, and are indeed registering to vote in high numbers.

The polls have indicated that Senator Barack Obama has gone ahead in many of the swing states.  In Florida and Nevada Obama has 51% and McCain 47%; Minnesota the figures are: Obama 54% and McCain 43%;  Missouri: Obama 49%  and McCain 48%; Virginia: Obama 53% and McCain 44%.

These times are truly amazing and very exciting; so let's keep the countdown going to one of the most important days in American History - Election Day.  As of Friday, October 3rd there is approximately 33 days left before Election Day - November 4, 2008, and before history is made in America.

I am still receiving many e-mails regarding a rumor about what one wears when voting.  The rumor is as follows: If one wears a campaign button or t-shirt into the polling place, will they be allowed to vote?  The fact about this issue per the Board of Elections is as follows: A voter may wear campaign paraphernalia (buttons, t-shirts, or stickers) into the polling place while he or she is there to vote (the voter may not linger in the polling place after voting). However, an election judge, challenger and watcher, or other person stationed inside the polling place or within 100 feet of the polling place may not wear or display campaign materials.

Please Register To Vote NOW!!!!   Remember the voter registration deadline is a few days away.  To be sure about your voter registration deadline log on NOW to http://www.voteforchange.com for the deadline date.  It's very simple after you log on, you will be able to register to vote, request to vote absentee and find your polling location.  Additionally, you can LOG ON HERE to see the voter registration date deadline for each state, and proceed with registering to vote by logging on HERE, and filling out the registration form at "Rock The Vote.com"(To access the form, click the "Register To Vote" Button from the menu at the top of the page).
