Greetings my
on Line Family:

Congratulations...
Ground Breaking Ceremony for Dr. Martin Luther King's Memorial
on the Monument Grounds & Highlights of One Heart
Charities Capital Star Talent Competition
by Susan
Mangatal
This week a "milestone" was
accomplished!!! Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be
memorialized and honored on the National Mall, among many other
great Americans. The ground breaking ceremony took place
on Monday, November 13, 2006, and President Bush and President Clinton
were both in attendance, along with Poet Maya Angelou, leaders
of the Civil Rights Movement including Jesse Jackson and Andrew
Young, Celebrity Oprah Winfrey, Senator Barack Obama, and
thousands of supporters who came out in the cloudy, cold weather to witness this great
accomplishment. President Bill Clinton signed the bill
authorizing the monument to be build on the prestigious piece of
land. Dr. King's monument is the first on the
mall honoring an African American, and its design is based in
part on Dr. King's 1963 "I Have A Dream" speech.
It will be built along
the edge of the Tidal Basin on a four-acre plot near the Potomac
River, midway between the monuments of Thomas Jefferson and
Abraham Lincoln.
The memorial is scheduled to open in 2008, and fundraising is still underway,
however the official
beginning of construction has not been announced yet. Organizers have raised about two-thirds ($70 Million) of the $100 million
needed to develop the monument.
President Bush addressed the crowd and
stated the memorial will give Dr. King his "rightful place
among the great Americans honored on our Mall", and further
stated that Dr. King's message of justice and liberty
"continues to inspire millions across the world".
President Clinton received
standing ovations while addressing the crowd, he stated "It
belongs here"! "Jefferson told us we were all
created equal, and Lincoln abolished Slavery; but both left much
undone".
Let's all celebrate because
this is truly a great accomplishment!!!
Please
continue supporting!!!

Highlights
of Capital Star Competition
Now that the
Capital Star Talent Competition is taking place in Virginia and
will continue for the new few weeks, the talent are more diverse
than before. This week we had several bands performing
different types of music (blue grass, classic rock, etc.)
A fabulous Hula Dancer even competed, as well as a contestant
that performed a wonderful country song. Again, I had the
pleasure of working with Robert Bates (Well known area
drummer who has been performing for a number of years, and
currently a part of Woodson Brothers Gospel Band out of
Nashville, Tennessee, and also currently owns his own tour bus
company), along with DJ
Nose (The most versatile DJ in the region).
Hollis
" Flash"
Lashley - our wonderfully funny host always does a great job
keeping us entertained. Good Job "Flash"!!!
Last week's winner
"Scryptur" performed for us and as I stated last week,
this young man is fantastic. Due to some minor
"glitches" with his CD, he asked the drummer from JFC
Band to accompany him. He performed two of his own
originally written rap songs and did really well. Again, he
had the entire place "rocking"

place Winner - "Tumblin' Thunder" Band
Performed Original Song "Traveling...Rock Me
Mama"
Thumblin
Thunder is comprised of Carl Lee Higgins (make-shift
washtub bass and vocals, Miss Carmella McMurtry
(fiddler) and Houng Dog Sherman (Guitar and Lead
vocals). All are Virginia natives the play
traditional bluegrass songs, as well as renditions of
popular songs in bluegrass style. Hence the name
"Tumblin Thunder", they do a little of tumblin'
with the traditionals, and a little bit of thunderin'
with the more current rock and pop songs. Carl,
Carmella and Houng Dog are classically trained musicians
and came together in 2006 with a common love for the
music of Ole' Dixie. They plan to continue laying
their blend of the old and the new in bars and on street
corners all through the area. |

2nd
Place Winner - Edith Sodollo
Accompanied by
Vince Parrish on Guitar. Performed
original song "I Don't Want To Be that Kind of
Girl"
Edith Sodolo can be found
showcasing her singing/songwriter talents around the
Washington-Metropolitan area at various venues and music
festivals. In a recent article by Unknown Legends
booking agency's owner David Hughes, he describes
Sodolo's vocals as "raw, but oh so
powerful". Ms. Sodolo was born in Melun,
France and her opportunistic parents moved to the U.S.
to raise her in Silver Spring, MD. Her eclectic
upbringing is the very thing that allows her to relate
to many kinds of people and draw them in with her
heartfelt lyrics and magnetic voice. Sodolo is
currently working on her demo and preparing to tour in a
music festival of other local acoustic soul artists
entitled Heavy Heart Hillary: Festival for the Longing. |

3rd
Place Winners - Duo Vinnie Johnson and Nonya
Whitley
Performed - "If this
world was mine"
Vinnie and Nonya are
both dynamic vocalists. Their voices blend
together for soothing yet exciting renditions. Vinnie
Johnson, known in the music circle as "Vinnie
Vill" grew up in Brooklyn, NY. He's been
singing in vocal groups since age 7, and in the 70's he
won first place at the Apollo Theater. Vinnie is
not just a singer, he is also a songwriter who has
produced over 40 songs. Vinnie is a member of
ASCAP and has been the opening act for several acts
including CC Penniston and R. Kelly, as well as with the
Dramatics and Delfonics. Since Vinnie moved to
Alexandria he assembled a team of rappers, singers and
producers to keep his hip hop past alive.
Nonya Whitley
is
originally from Peekstill, NY. She was raised
around so many different cultures which has allowed her
to be exposed to many different styles of music, Reggae
music, Latin music, hop hop, Country, R&B, Gospel,
Jazz and Classical, of which all are incorporated into
her style of singing. Music is what soothes
Nonya's soul, but most importantly she hopes one day she
can minister to others through song. |
Join us for Week 6 Competition at
Oasis on the Occoquan and check out the wonderful talent.
