WHAT'S HAPPENING by Todd Mangatal

Greetings To all among our on-line family:

It's been what? 4 weeks since I've been chilling, and not vibing with you, and I surly missed it.  You see for the past couple of years I found myself constantly sitting in front of the computer (which is not a bad thing), but I had decided to challenge myself a bit and get out in the world for a minute.  With the little time off I got caught up in some different projects, and became very busy, and is still a bit busy.  I do have so many things to say, and had intended on doing so this week especially with the elections that just passed, however my schedule did not permit me to jot down my thoughts for my weekly commentary, (which is racing all around my mind).  My thoughts on these elections and the whole entire situation are completely different and I do intend to share them with you, however I will do so next week.  Notice below Susan has shared her views with you.  Let me know what you think todd@ariousentertainment.net.   As CA Governor Arnold would say "I'll be back" with you next week with my commentaries.

The “So Called” Presidential Elections Susan Mangatal's View

Hum…this week was astonishing with the outcome of the Presidential “so called” elections.  I was so proud of the voting turnout, which was phenomenal in our area, and around the US.  Our people came out and voted in record numbers.  Yes, even though I knew better, I was completely convinced that a change was upon us, but it’s obvious that it wasn't!   In the past weeks, many friends, associates and even family members approach Todd and I and indicate that things would be better when Mr. Kerry wins, each time Todd would respond “prepare yourself for disappointment because Mr. Bush is going to win”.  I would not dear say it, but Todd always openly expresses his feeling, so he had no problem letting them know the truth.  Needless to say he was right.

I personally don’t agree with any of Bush’s “Bad Man” policies, but I am aware of the situation and know the “big picture”, so I am not surprised.  We as a people have got to open our eyes and see the “big picture”!  This is way beyond us!!!

There are so many issues that mystifies me, such as: (1) It’s clear our vote does not count, because it’s really up to some “Electoral vote”.  I hate to sound ignorant, but what is this “Electoral vote”?  You may recall 4 years ago it was documented that Mr. Gore won the popular vote (which is the vote of the people) but lost the “Electoral Vote”.  What’s up with that?  (2) Here it is, this “Bad Man” (Bush) destroys a country, kills numerous innocent people, selfishly destroyed and tore families apart, and claimed he was looking for weapons of mass destruction, but couldn’t find them.  How could Mr. Bush penalize a whole country?  But we sit back and just let him do it!  People you must think of all the families in that country who have lost their children, who are innocent and are not terrorist!  (3) Not only that, think about our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts and uncles who have been sent to this place to fight Mr. Bush’s War.  Think of all the many lives that have been lost…our own family members lives lost over this crazy war…a bogus and heinous war!  (4) Last week while listening to talk radio the announcer stated that Mr. Bush has submitted a bill to Congress asking for over 200 billion dollars just to rebuild Iraq.  How could our tax dollars be used to re-build a place that should not have been destroyed in the first place, just so that a “Bad Man” could prove his wrong theories?  Even I was personally affected during these past 4 years, by loosing my wonderful job because of the failing economy.  Yet, this “Bad Man” is still in power and is left to run our country again.  People we all have got to open our eyes!  How could we constantly keep chilling, and is unable to see the real picture.

For me, all I can do is continue listening to the words of Reggae Star Capleton who says “Bun down the evil and wicked Man” and “their day will come”.  That will keep me going.  I can’t believe people are so up in arms about Capleton’s words, but he is quite right, that’s the only answer “Bun Them Down”!

Well, as for Mr. Kerry, maybe it’s a good thing he is not running this country, because realistically, how could he choose to concede so soon.  It doesn’t make any sense, nor does it take anything for him to wait until all the votes are counted before accepting that he lost.  My motto is “fight until you can’t fight any more”, You know, it shows that he really doesn’t care that so many have come out and have voted for him, he needed to just hold out for a minute to show that he believed and is happy that so many have supported him.  In my opinion that shows no backbone, and this country doesn’t need someone without backbone to run it.  This is truly aggravating!  Todd and I often laugh to ourselves when we see Mr. Bush in action, with his “shoot them up, and hunt them down and kill them all attitude” what a “Bad Man”!  I actually thought the “Bad Man” era was over, but no...this “Bad Man” still reigns and run things!

Wow, Susan is real passionate about this election, and many of her points are valid, but we have discussed this on numerous occasion and she knows the answers and the truth!!!!  However, I guess it's hard for her to accept that the "Bad Man" era is not over!!  We all must accept that!

Anyway, back to my regular every day life and to what keeps my mind in “tack” is the love for the music and entertainment.  As you are aware this past weekend was Howard University’s Homecoming, and our town was “jumping”, lots of Howard University’s alumni, past and present was in town.  The Caribbean Community had lots of things happening in celebration of this weekend as well, and we were “graced” with Trinidad artists Bunji Garlin, and Machel Montano.  Even though we were happy that these artists were in town, we were disappointed that both were performing on the same night.  Anyway, we swung by Bunji’s show, and the line was so long to get in the venue that we didn’t make it in. The same thing almost happened with Machel’s show, due to the massive amount of people.  I was unable to find parking at the venue, so I told my wife (Susan) to go on without me, and check out the show, but Jah works in mysterious ways, and to my surprise management of the venue found parking for me.  Anyway the place was rammed by the time we got there (real late), and it was clear that folks were extremely excited to see Machel, who by the way put on a fabulous show.  Machel’s band Xtatik is very versatile, they played everything, and Machel as usual was full of energy, actually the entire band is extremely energetic.   Being that Susan and I are always analyzing our experiences, we got into a deep conversation about Machel, I felt that he is a wasted talent, and after explaining my point to Susan, she finally agreed.  Yes, Machel is very talented, and to me it’s a waste to see that his music is not getting any airplay in the mainstream/crossover market.  I strongly believe that his music will hit, and will sell, and not only that, he is a great performer.   I don’t know what it is, but he deserves to be in the mainstream!

Part III of "Taking A Break - With "Sam'O"

FROM LAST 2 WEEKS, SAM’O SAID ABOUT CALYPSO COMPETITIONS:    The competitions are great fun.  They are a way of presenting my new music, and the competitions are a way for people to know me who did not know me before.  I have been disappointed with the decisions of the judges, though.

INTERVIEWER:    SAM’O, you seem to go to great lengths in your preparation and your performances for these competitions.  In fact, you go beyond what has been normal in the traditional competitions.  We’ve seen you dressed as an authentic African warrior when you presented “The Dream.”  We’ve seen an unusual, but well thought out and very well performed stage performance when you presented “TATA.”  Audiences respond very well to what you do.  So, why haven’t you been crowned Calypso Monarch yet?

SAM’O:       (laughing)  I keep asking myself that same question.  I love performing.  I love making audiences happy and excited.  I write and arrange all of my own music.  I believe my music is not traditional.  It is a blend of many types of music, calypso, soca, chutney.   That makes my music unique, and so it is not always understood in the traditional calypso arenas.  I’ve had comments from people that one of the songs I recently presented was not calypso.  People who say those things do not have an understanding of the type of music I do.   Every place I perform “The Dream” and “TATA”  and other of my songs, I get great responses.  The CD sales for my songs also go very well when I perform in different places.  Calypso music should be received as progressing.  It should be allowed to progress -- rock and roll has changed a lot since Elvis hasn’t it?

INTERVIEWER:    Will you continue to enter the competitions?

SAM’O:       (laughing again) I keep asking myself that same question too.  The competitions are great fun, but I am not sure if I will continue them.  The music I write is much more serious than much of the music presented in competitions.  It is also not traditional.   I want to be known for the seriousness of the messages presented in my lyrics, and for the unique style of my music, and for the strong presentations I do in my performances.  I am really not sure if competitions are the way to progress for me as a performer in this country.  The audiences respond very well to me, but the judges never seem to agree.  This, I believe, may hurt me as a performer as I continue to try to grow in the U.S.  I will make a decision about that – maybe after I write my next song.

PART IV – NEXT WEEK SAM’O TALKS MORE ABOUT HIS MUSIC, HIS CALLING, AND HIS LATEST GOSPEL CD!!!
