far this month (November) has been a full one all
around. It’s been filled with celebrations and awareness of
important issues and causes. Although, I have
highlighted a few of these significant issues throughout
the month, let me spend a few moments sharing with you a
few others. (Other issues that November
is set aside to bring awareness to.)
Perhaps, one of these important causes are near
and dear to your heart and you can obtain information,
or get motivated to support in some way or another.
Diabetes Month. It seems everyone around me
are being diagnosed with
Diabetes, and it concerns me greatly.

life-threatening complications such as heart disease,
stroke, kidney disease, blindness, and

States live with diabetes

future with diabetes if current trends continue.

Adoption Awareness Month - November is
set aside to raise awareness about the adoption of
children and youth from foster care. Further it raises
public awareness about the approximately 500,000 of
children and youth waiting/living in foster care
across the county for permanent, loving families.
There is a tremendous need for families to come
forward. This year's theme: "You
don't have to be perfect to be a perfect parent."

Epilepsy Awareness Month. November is
National Epilepsy Awareness Month, and 2009 marks the
40th anniversary of this important designation. There
are approximately 2.5 million Americans with epilepsy
(characterized by recurrent, unprovoked
seizures). For many, the biggest problem they
face, besides seizures, is society's negative
attitudes about the condition. Each year the Epilepsy
Foundation presents a public education campaign about
seizure disorders, first aid, acceptance and

Military Family Appreciation Month. During
the month of November we honor the extraordinary
contributions and sacrifices of our nation’s
military families Army families of Active,
Guard, Reserve, survivors, veterans, and retirees are
giving back in a time of need and sustain and support
the Soldiers who defend our Nation. Army Families are
Army Strong. Throughout our history, the
steadfast support of military families has always been
a source of inspiration. /They have faced the
special challenges of long deployments, family
separations and frequent relocations with great
courage and resolve. In doing so, their selfless
dedication has directly contributed to the mission
readiness of our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines,
Coast Guardsmen and Merchant Marines. For

bring awareness to the importance for the
significant contributions the First Americans made to

Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month -
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible,
progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory
and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to
carry out the simplest tasks of daily living.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association 2009
Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures
report, there are more than 5 million Americans
living with Alzheimer’s and as many as 10 million
family caregivers. This November, during National
Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and National

((501(c)(3) Nonprofit Organization), held at Zanzibar on
the Waterfront in DC on Nov. 14th (Produced and Directed
by Mr. Keith

impressed with the talent I witnessed at this
exceptional event, and my experience of judging these
talented teens was quite difficult, but purposeful
We were treated
to special performances by several local young artists
and special guests, who entertained us to the
fullest. I was very moved by the electrifying
performance of Rashida Jolley, a young Harpist
and fantastic singer. Ms. Jolly recently appeared
on the nationally syndicated NBC show "America's
Got Talent". Local dance group Beat Ya
Feet Kings and Queen was outstanding as well (They
recently appeared on the syndicated "America's Best
Dance Crew". Additionally, we were graced by
(1) the lovely ladies of MAIN GIRL who rocked the
house; (2) local singer and judge Mahoganee
who took the stage and sang a lovely song - a tribute to her
mother, as well as (3) artists FACE and MAIR.
Finally, local Hip Hop artists OVER TYME and
MARLOW closed out the entertainment with their
hit "Me and my Skateboard"
The entire show
was so incredible, and well directed; and the
contestants were really very good. I would like to
say congratulations to First Place winners Shannon Hayes
and Deja Briggmon; 2nd place winner Ms. Keziah
John-Paul who was my favorite; 3rd place winner Sherae
Smith; and 4th place winner Jesse Thomas.
Additionally, congratulations to rapper Acurah White (Ms
NuNu) who performed very well and was awarded Ms.
