WHAT'S HAPPENING By: Todd Mangatal

Greetings to All on my On-line Community:

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY

Like to wish everyone a Happy Valentines Day!

There are lots going on this month.  We are in the middle of Black History Month, and in the last few years there have been lots of achievements made by blacks in America, however the struggle still continues.  Here in DC the black on black crime and violence continues.  Last week we had a shooting in one of high schools, which left a 17-year-old dead, and an 18-year-old shooter now in jail…and for what?  They say it was an on-going feud over a jacket, now they are talking about having the Police Department take over security in the schools.  Does this make a good environment for learning, or is this just preparation for prison?  There was a time when blacks had to fight for freedom, civil rights and equality, now I would say we pretty much have achieved all of those, but we are still fighting amongst ourselves.  For What…When we should be looking towards economic freedom and financial power.  We as blacks dominate sports, entertainment, and we are even gaining grounds in politics through people such as Colin Powell, and Condoleezza Rice who holds two of the top jobs in President Bush’s cabinet.  Again, we must teach the youths where we’ve been and the struggles we’ve gone through to get to the point we are at now.  Let’s not limit the teaching of our history to one (1) month, teach it everyday, because it is critical for our progression as a people.

February is also Bob Marley’s birth month.  Bob Marley’s music is timeless and it’s crossed many boundaries.  His words are prophetic, and in the times we are going through now with all the war and crime, this is the type of music we need to guide and uplift us.  Sometimes, it seems as the words in Bob Marley’s songs had to have come from a higher place, because they are so “deep” and meaningful.  Reggae music on a whole has the power to uplift and unify the world.  Reggae music is growing and developing just as R&B and Hip Hop has done, and it’s a joy to witness the development into the mainstream market.  I would like to congratulate Sean Paul for winning a Grammy this year and his performance on the Grammy’s with Sting was amazing.  I hope he continues to grow, and most importantly I hope he keeps his music real, because we really don’t want reggae music to become Hip Hop and/or R&B, which usually happens when an artist achieves a certain level of success.

Don’t forget the Bob Marley Birthday bash and expo in Wilmington Delaware next weekend Saturday the 21st and Sunday the 22nd.  Saturday night is the birthday bash featuring live Reggae, open mike, a Bob Marley video show, and complimentary Caribbean cuisine, and Sunday is the Expo.  I think my wife and I will roll up to Delaware on Sunday for the Expo, hope to see you there!

Take the time this weekend and check out some reggae music.  There are many great artists besides Sean Paul, Shaggy and Elephant Man that have meaningful music that I think you will enjoy.  Some of my recommendations are: Freddy McGreggor, The late great Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Sizzla, and Luciano, just to name a few.  This weekend here in DC we are blessed again to have one of my favorite performer live “Sanchez”.  This is a perfect artist and show to celebrate Valentines Day with your love one.  Sanchez always puts on a good show and you’ll always get more than your monies worth.  Additionally, there is another great singer performing with Sanchez this weekend he is Ritchie Stevens.  The very last CD I checked out from him was full of ballads and love songs.  His voice is unbelievable.  If you love Luther Vandrose, then you must check out Ritchie Stevens.  This is a show you don’t want to miss, it’s taking place this Saturday at the Crossroads in Bladensburg, Maryland.  The Crossroads has a restaurant, so it’s a great place to have dinner before checking out the show.   For details on their dinner and show package check out www.crossroadsclub.com.

Last week I had an opportunity to check out a new spot that just opened in DC.  It’s the Killi’s Café, which actually is the return of the Killamanjaro which was the Caribbean and African hot spot throughout the 80’s and early 90’s.  They are now located in the space that was formally occupied by Club 2K9 at 8th and U Streets, next to the Tropicana Restaurant.  We attended the Happy Hour on Friday, and that was very nice.  The place and atmosphere is really cool and cozy, and it’s nice to see the Killi’s crew back on the scene.  They have a restaurant, which we haven’t had the opportunity to sample yet, but check it out and let us know how it was.  Remember people…Killi’s is back on the scene, so check them out!

To all my soca massive who haven’t gone to Trinidad for Carnival, and you want to get in the Carnival mood, check out Sprang International at Killi’s on Saturday 2/14/04, and hear all the new 2004 Soca tunes.  Next Saturday the Radio Boys from WE RADIO 93.5 are having a party to celebrate T&T’s Carnival here in DC at Killi’s Café.  Music will be by Demolition Dex, Muzik Nashun, Mystic Vibes, Sprang International Crew and all your favorite DJ’s from WE RADIO.  The doors open at 10:00 pm and goes to 5:00 am.  They have $3.00 beers before midnight, and it’s 18 to party and 21 to drink.  So if you can’t make to T&T for Carnival, check out the Radio Boys at Killi’s next Saturday, February 21st.

Thanks for the overwhelming amount of votes we received regarding the DC Reggae Awards, which will be taking place on March 5th.  I have placed four (4) more categories below for you to vote on.

Again, have a safe and happy holiday weekend!
