WHAT'S HAPPENING By: Susan Mangatal

Greetings to All on my On-Line Community:

Want to start out by saying WELCOME BACK to all who traveled home to Trinidad for Carnival!  From all the reports, everyone seemed to have had lots of fun!  It was nice to see “Sprang International” back in the place direct from Trinidad playing on one of the many “Poison” trucks.  He said it was a great experience! It’s really nice to see everyone back…NOW GET READY FOR DC Carnival!!!!

The DC Reggae Awards…I really don’t have much to say!  We’re known to be very honest and “tell it like it is”, so honestly…there is nothing I can say!  Todd and I attended, got there right before they began announcing the winners, saw some of the local acts, had a few drinks and left.  I don’t even know if I won because we don’t believe they announced the winner for the category I was nominated for.  What sticks out in my mind is a thank you speech from a winner “Buffy”.  He thanked the organizer for the award, and stated that he felt the awards should have been held at a better place.  We agreed and so did many in the audience.  The place “The King Solomon Lodge” was not the place for this program.  I guess since it had been held at “upper class” places in the past (Zanzibar), it had become a “top notch” event, very classy and nice, but this place was a major step down.  Don’t get me wrong…“The King Solomon Lodge” can be used for many other events, but not an awards show/presentation.  In addition, many in the community were very disappointed by the admittance arrangement for the nominees, judges, and other supporters and participants of this event.  We were so turned off that we didn’t even capture many photos…we just took a few.  Our friend Kimmy from www.bashmentlinkup.com took some, so you will have to hit up her site for pictures.  Since all the winners were not announced at the event, and was done very disorderly and hastily, I’m sorry that we don’t have the winners either.  You will have to hit up the Reggae Awards site for the winners.  All the reviews we got back, and the discussion we have had with the folks who attended this event was very negative…and to think we were so looking forward to it.  One positive thing we obtained from attending this event was the opportunity to see and greet all the wonderful folks in our community.  It’s always a delight and a pleasure liming and chatting with everyone.  Much respect goes out to Juicy, the best caterer in Washington DC.  We have known Juicy for many years, and he’s a wonderful gentleman…it was a pleasure seeing him in the place!

Todd had an amazing birthday…the week long celebration got started on Friday the 27th, and Saturday, continued on Sunday the 29th at the “Roads”, where the owner (who throughout the years always celebrates Todd’s birthday with us in a big way) broke out the expensive champagne, and flowing drinks.  Of course, the night was real nice with all the stimulating and thought provoking discussions and conversations.  Its always nice drinking and vibing with the owner…Much respect to him for his graciousness!    Things began wining down on Thursday, when I surprised Todd by dragging him to New York for dinner at his favorite restaurant in Manhattan.  Despite the craziness at the awards show on Friday, we tried to continue with the celebration, and on Saturday we closed out by beginning another birthday celebration for our Friend Mark Humphrey.  Happy Birthday Mark!!!!!

Last week Todd indicated we experienced a crazy incident at our favorite hang out spot in Bladensburg (the Roads).  This involved our car being towed from a legal parking space, with no sign indicating that cars would be towed.  Not only was our car towed from this establishment, we discovered 18 cars that particular night was towed as well, and the fee to retrieve ones car was $200.00.  Imagine going to a club, spending lots on drinks, then upon leaving finding out your car is towed, and most importantly spending another $200.00 to retrieve your car…that was an expensive night out at a club and annoying!  Anyway, we had been parking in this spot for some time now, due to all the parking problems at this establishment.  What really concerned us about this situation was the enormous $200.00 fee for a car that was towed illegally, and to less than a mile away…that is outrageous, and it seems like harassment!  Upon retrieving our car, we had an opportunity to speak to many whose cars were towed, and they indicated they were parked legally (as we were).  With this in mind we began a discussion with the Manager of the tow truck company about the illegalness of the towing, and the enormous fee.  He indicated that tow truck companies in Prince George’s county (a predominantly black county here in Maryland) has no “cap” on the fees that are charged to individuals whose cars are towed.  The companies can charge whatever they feel, and that’s very wrong!  We recall in the past 2 years or so, this same problem occurred in Virginia…where tow truck companies would tow a car and charge enormous fees to folks to retrieve their cars.  The residence, business owners and patrons rallied to establish a “cap” on towing fees, and they were successful, now a reasonable set fee have been established for retrieving a towed car in their counties.  We want to see the same thing take place here in Bladensburg and in Prince George’s county as a whole.  Therefore, we intend to look into filing a Class Action lawsuit against Bladensburg, PG County, the Tow Association in Maryland, etc. in an effort to bring this problem to “lite”, and hopefully obtain a “cap” on these enormous towing fees.  We would like to put a call out to citizens and people in our community who have had their cars towed wrongfully in Bladensburg and PG County Maryland, and want to stand up and do something about this problem.  Additionally, if there are any attorneys who would like to take on this high profile case, please contact us at ariousentertainment@earthlink.net.

Please support Committee International with “Soca In The City 4” at Kili’s Kafe, featuring direct from Trinidad’s Carnival Maximus Dan tonight 3/12/04.  Check below for more info.

DC/MD/VA look out for Caribbean Connection in Association with Trinidad’s Mas Band “T & T Rampage” for DC Carnival 2004!  We’ve viewed the costumes, and they are HOT and reasonably priced!  Launchings of this new band will be announced in the near future.  Arious is proud to be a sponsor of this new Carnival Band!
