Greetings On-Line Family from Susan Mangatal and all of us at Arious Entertainment - susan@ariousentertainment.us

This week was a distressing, and an important one for all of us here in America . Our taxes were due on Wednesday, April 15, 2009.

With all the hardships many of us are undergoing due to the horrific economy, scores of us really didn't want to think about these “freaking” taxes, much less file them.  However, as it has always been...WE MUST FILE!

This year I made it on time, and the outcome of mine simply did not leave a smile on my face, just an aching head.  Of course, this left me thinking about our "crooked" government officials, who for years HAVE NOT been paying their taxes.

As you may know, about 2 months or so ago it seemed everyone President Barack Obama nominated for positions in his cabinet/administration had not paid their taxes (for many years.)  For example, it has been reported that President Obama’s nominee to head his Health and Human Services Department (Tom Daschle) somehow missed $128,000 in taxes and another $15,000 in penalties and fees, along with a few others who withdrew their nominations due to their tax evasions and non-payments.

Most importantly, the head of President Obama’s Treasury Department Timothy Geithner admitted to not paying his taxes for a number of years; which was “brought to light” as a result of his appointment hearings with the Senate Finance Committee.   Imagine a known tax cheater/evader is the head of America’s Treasury Department and whose responsibility is to overseas the Internal Revenue Service.  Mr. Geithner after claiming the reason for not paying his taxes was an oversight practically received a "pat on the back," welcomes, hand shakes, and was allowed to pay the thousands he owed.  Most importantly, he was appointed and allowed to become the head of one of America’s significant and influencial job -- running the Treasury Department…How crazy!!!

Can you believe that these government officials, the people we voted to represent us; the people who write and administer laws; the people who have access to great tax advice; the people who earn enough and certainly can afford to pay taxes - have been breaking the tax laws without a care in the world.  They are truly hypocrites and what many of them have been doing is fundamentally wrong!  And guess what…they are the same ones who persecute Americans for not paying their taxes.  How truly appalling…don’t you agree?

Undoubtedly, the folks who make up the government are extremely corrupt and greedy.  They obviously get away with all their wrong doings and continue writing and administering our laws, while the citizens (poor or rich) suffer tremendously and is jailed for tax evasion/non-payment…what a shame!

To be quite honest, I was tempted to join the many who attended TEA parties that took place all across America on Tax Day (Taxes Enough Already Movement).  Americans angry over taxes and the economy attend anti-tax “tea parties” around the country on Tax Day, Wednesday, April 15th.  Rallies used the dreaded April 15 – the U.S. deadline to file income taxes as a hook to vent about government spending and corporate bailouts in a homage to the Boston Tea Party.  The Tea parties were promoted by FreedomWorks, a conservative nonprofit advocacy group based in Washington DC and led by former Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey of Texas who is now a lobbyist.  This organization is said to have been originated through online social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter and was exposed exclusively through Fox News.

As much as I have been "stressing" and "tripping" about this issue, you can imagine I came to my senses quickly after realizing that in addition to protesting against taxes, many who are involved with these TEA Parties are not happy with President Obama and his policies and have found a way to shout their displeasure regarding him, his policies and all that he has been doing.   It is built on too much hate especially for the current administration, so I must find another way to express my disgust about this entire tax situation!

On a more happier note, I am pleased to share with you the following information.

This weekend will be historical and exciting for my country Trinidad, because The 5th Summit of The Americas will be held in Trinidad and Tobago beginning on April 17th  through the 19th.

The Summit of The Americas brings together the leaders, Presidents, Heads of State and Government of the Western Hemisphere (all countries of the Americas) to discuss common concerns, seek solutions and develop a shared vision for their future development of the region, be it economic, social or political.  The major summit taking place in Port of Spain T&T will focus on developing feasible solutions to the challenges facing the Hemisphere and delivering tangible and measurable outcomes for all citizens.

President Barack Obama, his wife First Lady Michelle, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, and a few others from his Administration will be in Trinidad for the Summit.  This is President Obama’s first opportunity to address 33 other Heads of State from the Americas, and it is an important moment for him to set the tone of his administration’s policy toward the region as well as to re-engage with the region; which is an important factor that needs to be mended due to the void created by the Bush Administration (who left the US relations with the countries of the region in a disastrous condition.)  Additionally, President Obama will have the opportunity to address the leaders of Latin America directly while offering his vision on US Latin America relations to the world.

In past summits progress was made which provided a solid basis for developing a focused, integrated and results oriented Inter-American Agenda that encouraged the effective engagement of civil society, the private sector, indigenous peoples, afro-descendants, woman, youth and regional institutions in the Summit Process.

This 5th Summit of the Americas theme is: “Securing Our Citizens’ Future by Promoting Human Prosperity, Energy, Security and Environmental Sustainability."

The main objective of the Summit is: a commitment to hemispheric integration and collective responsibility designed utilizing a process to address the problems and challenges that the Americas face in order to jointly seek solutions that will improve the quality of life of the citizens of the Americas along with their security and economic well being.

As you can imagine my family in Trinidad are really thrilled that President Obama will be in the country this weekend.  While talking to my Mom over the Easter Holiday, she talked a lot about the preparations taking place in the country.  The increased military personnel from many different countries, the ships that are docked in the waters around the country, and even the craziness that is taking place with the picking up of the homeless folks from the streets and getting the place "squeaky" clean for this important summit.

It was so funny when my brother told me he wished I would hitch a ride on Air Force One and travel home with the President so I can visit him, his wife and his girls.  I explained to him that his wish will not come true, and I absolutely didn't have it like that here in America. LOL!

Read President Barack Obama's Letter regarding the Summit in Trinidad.

AS WE APPROACH the Summit Of The Americas, our hemisphere is faced with a clear choice.

We can overcome our shared challenges with a sense of common purpose, or we can stay mired in the old debates of the past.

For the sake of all our people, we must choose the future.

Too often, the United States has not pursued and sustained engagement with our neighbors. We have been too easily distracted by other priorities, and have failed to see that our own progress is tied directly to progress throughout the Americas.

My administration is committed to renewing and sustaining a broader partnership between the United States and the hemisphere on behalf of our common prosperity and our common security.

We have already begun to move in a new direction.

This week, we amended a Cuba policy that has failed for decades to advance liberty or opportunity for the Cuban people. In particular, the refusal to allow Cuban-Americans to visit or provide resources to their families on the island made no sense - particularly after years of economic hardship in Cuba, and the devastating hurricanes that took place last year.

Now, that policy has changed.

The United States-Cuba relationship is one example of a debate in the Americas that is too often dragged back to the 20th century. To confront our economic crisis, we don't need a debate about whether to have a rigid, state-run economy or unbridled and unregulated capitalism - we need pragmatic and responsible action that advances our common prosperity.

To combat lawlessness and violence, we don't need a debate about whether to blame right-wing paramilitaries or left-wing insurgents - we need practical cooperation to expand our common security.

That is why leaders from Santiago to Brasilia to Mexico City are focused on a renewed partnership of the Americas that makes progress on fundamental issues like economic recovery, energy, and security.

The global economic crisis has hit the Americas hard, particularly our most vulnerable populations.

Years of progress in combating poverty and inequality hangs in the balance. The United States is working to advance prosperity in the hemisphere by jumpstarting our own recovery.

In doing so, we will help spur trade, investment, remittances, and tourism that provides a broader base for prosperity in the hemisphere.

Collective action.  We also need collective action.

At the G-20 Summit, the United States pledged to seek nearly half a billion dollars in immediate assistance for
vulnerable populations, while working with G-20 partners to set aside substantial resources to help countries through difficult times.

We have called upon the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to maximize lending to restart the flow of credit, and stand ready to examine the needs and capacity of the IDB going forward.

And we are working to put in place 21st century rules of the road to prevent the abuses that caused the current crisis.

While we confront this crisis, we must build a new foundation for long-term prosperity.

Our hemisphere has bountiful natural resources that could make renewable energy plentiful and sustainable, while creating jobs for our people.

In the process, we can confront climate change that threatens rising sea levels in the Caribbean, diminishing glaciers in the Andes, and powerful storms on the Gulf Coast of the United States. That is why I look forward to pursuing a new Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas that will help us learn from one another, share technologies, leverage investment, and maximize our comparative advantage.

Just as we advance our common prosperity, we must advance our common security. The United States will strongly support respect for the rule of law, better law enforcement, and stronger judicial institutions.

Security must be advanced through our commitment to partner with those who are courageously battling drug cartels, gangs and other criminal networks throughout the Americas.

And our efforts start at home. By reducing demand for drugs and curtailing the illegal flow of weapons and bulk cash south across our border, we can advance security in the United States and beyond.

And going forward, we will sustain a lasting dialogue in the hemisphere to ensure that we are building on best practices, adapting to new threats, and coordinating our efforts.

Finally, the summit gives every democratically- elected leader in the Americas the opportunity to reaffirm our shared values.

Each of our countries has pursued its own democratic journey, but we must be joined together in our commitment to liberty, equality, and human rights.

That is why I look forward to the day when every country in the hemisphere can take its seat at the table consistent with the Inter-American Democratic Charter.

And just as the United States seeks that goal in reaching out to the Cuban people, we expect all of our friends in the hemisphere to join together in supporting liberty, equality, and human rights for all Cubans.

This summit offers the opportunity of a new beginning.

Advancing prosperity, security and liberty for the people of the Americas depends upon 21st century partnerships, freed from the posturing of the past. That is the leadership and partnership that the United States stands ready to provide.

Earth Day - April 22nd is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment -- an annual U.S. celebration of the environment and a time for Americans to assess the work still needed to protect the natural gifts of our planet. Earth Day is a time to celebrate gains we have made and create new visions to accelerate environmental progress. Earth Day is a time to unite around new actions.  Earth Day and every day is a time to act to protect our planet.

Earth Day has no central organizing force behind it, though several nongovernmental organizations work to keep track of the thousands of local events in schools and parks that mark the day. It affirms that environmental awareness is part of the country's consciousness and that the idea of protecting the environment -- once the province of a few conservationists -- has moved from the extreme to the mainstream of American thought.

Earth Day 2009, will mark the beginning of The Green Generation CampaignTM.  Earth Day 2009 must be a day of action and civic participation, to defend The Green GenerationTM’s core principles:

  • A carbon-free future based on renewable energy that will end our common dependency on fossil fuels, including coal.

  • An individual’s commitment to responsible, sustainable consumption.

  • Creation of a new green economy that lifts people out of poverty by creating millions of quality green jobs and transforms the global education system into a green one.

Earth Day Network will commemorate Earth Day 2009 in Washington DC at the National Mall with a large-scale event.  On April 19th from noon to 6pm, like in years past, hundreds of thousands of people will take Metrobus, Metrorail, walk, and bike to the heart of the nation’s capital to witness the official launch of The Green GenerationTM and show their support for responsible, brave environmental policy that helps us face the challenges ahead. Earth Day will bring together families, adults of all ages, civic leaders, entertainers and other community members to celebrate Earth Day and share a common commitment to make greener life choices and stem the tide of climate change.

The event will feature top talent The Flaming Lips, Moe., Los Lobos and Dj. Spooky. Confirmed speakers and celebrities include: EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, Chevy Chase, Matthew Modine, Representative Edward Markey, Majora Carter, Reverend Yearwood of The Hip Hop Caucus and Steve Thomas, former host of This Old House.

The event includes an Eco-Roadshow with exhibits from non-profits, companies striving to go green, government agencies and foreign embassies. Exhibitors will be located in the main event area, between 4th and 7th streets on the National Mall, and also on the corner of Maryland and Independence avenues, right by the Museum of the American Indian
