Greetings On-Line Family from Susan Mangatal and all of us at Arious Entertainment - susan@ariousentertainment.us

National Crime Victims' Rights Week will be commemorated Sunday, April 26 through Saturday, May 2, 2009.  This years' theme is: "25 Years of Rebuilding Lives: Celebrating the Victims of Crime Act"

National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW) has been a time of national remembrance since 1981.  It is an opportunity for communities, victims and their loved ones and victim-serving professionals to join together and reflect on the "hard-won" progress achieved in victims' rights and services and the challenges many crime victims still face.

This years' theme recognizes and celebrates the profound and wide reaching impact of the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) on victims' rights and resources.  This act was established in 1984 by the United States Department of Justice - Office of Victims of Crime (OVC), and the act was put in place to oversee diverse programs that benefit victims of crime.

For 25 years through the Crime Victims Fund, VOCA has supported thousands of agencies and millions of victims across the nation.  The Fund provides critical financial assistance to victim compensation and victim service programs, such as domestic violence shelters and rape crisis centers, and it funds information and support for victims as their cases move through the courts.  It is a lifeline services that help victims to heal.  The agency support trainings designed to educate criminal justice and allied professionals regarding the rights and needs of crime victims.

OVC also sponsors this annual National Crime Victims' Rights Week (in April), which helps lead communities throughout the country in their observances of this special week.  Rallies, candlelight vigils, and a host of other commemorative activities are held on a yearly basis to promote victims' rights and to honor crime victims and those who advocate on their behalf.

This year leading up to the national commemoration of the Department of Justice's NCVRW there are two important events being hosted by Attorney General Eric Holder .

1.  A National Observance and Candlelight Ceremony was held on the 23rd of April at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

2. On the 24th of April there will be a National Crime Victims' Rights Week Awards Ceremony which will be held at Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium, 1301 Constitution Avenue, N.W., Washington DC from 1:30-3:00 pm.

It is wonderful to know that a gentleman who we have been observing and following for a number of years has been nominated by the United States Department of Justice Office of Victims of Crime www.ovc.gov to receive the National Service Award for work being done on behalf of victims of Crime.  This lovely gentleman is Mr. Kenneth E. Barnes, Sr., MS.

Mr. Barnes, Sr. is a local gentleman who has been working tirelessly on his mission of motivating and mobilizing communities to take a proactive approach to reducing homicides and the senseless violence occurring in his local area (Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia.)  Mr. Barnes, Sr., due to the untimely death of his son (Kenneth Barnes Jr.) who were gunned down violently by a 17 year old youth in a robbery attempt in September 2001 founded ROOT Inc. (Reaching Out To Others Together).

Since the day Mr. Barnes, Sr. lost his son he has very vocal about his tragic loss and has been doing everything in his power to bring awareness to gun violence.  He has been an activist campaigning to lawmakers, community leaders, provider organizations and others regarding his message of taking proactive measures rather than reactionary methods to reducing gun violence and increasing incidents of youth violence taking place in communities throughout America.

Mr. Barnes, Sr. hard work has been paying off because 2 years ago the Prince George's County Council in Maryland recognized and honored him for his exemplary dedication, personal commitment and inspiration spirit by paying tribute to his son proclaiming and declaring November 20th Kenneth E. Barnes Jr. Day in Prince George's County Maryland - In memory of Kenneth E. Barnes Jr.

We at Arious commend and congratulate Mr. Kenneth E. Barnes, Sr. on being recognized for his dedication, hard work and on receiving this excellent service award from the Department of Justice OVC.  He certainly deserves it, and we are delighted to see him receive it.

To our on-line family and friends, or if any of you know of someone who has been victimized by crime, please feel free to join Mr. Barnes to obtain support, and to help in his efforts to continue the campaign to reduce violence and gun2009NCVRWInfo.&referrals_1.jpg (542412 bytes) violence during these difficult economic times.  You can reach Mr. Barnes, Sr. at the following address and Telephone #: Kenneth E. Barnes, Sr., MS, Founder/CEO ROOT (Reaching Out to Others Together), Inc. 1123 Michigan Ave, NE Washington, DC 20017 Tel: (202) 332-ROOT (7668)  For your information you can click on the following flyer for a list of information and referrals.

"Too many lives are being lost; too many victims injured, and too many communities are being held hostage to this systemic and endemic tide of violence.  As a government, and as a community, we must begin to offer proactive, rather than reactive, alternatives."

Kenneth E. Barnes, Sr., MS

For several weeks now, we have been receiving information about Caribbean Carnivals in the United States, as well as information from Band Leaders in our area regarding their band launchings, costumes and events.

Undoubtedly, the Carnival Season in North America is upon us.  Actually in a few weeks (about 3 to be exact) during the Memorial Day Weekend  the Carnival Season truly kicks off due to the Atlanta Caribbean Carnival taking place.  Please note: A Caribbean Carnival is an event which is very similar to the "Mardi Gras" that takes place in New Orleans, Louisiana.  It is definitely not as many folks think - an amusement park with rides and games.  Unlike in the Caribbean where Carnival is part of the culture, here in America it's more a showcase of the culture.

This weekend the Atlanta Carnival will have it's official launching Press Conference.  See the details below:
