"The
benefits [of the resurrection] and innumerable. To list a
few: Our illnesses don't seem nearly so final; Our fears fade and
lose their grip; Our grief over those who have done on is
diminished; Our desires to press on in spite of the obstacles is
rejuvenated...Our identity as Christians is strengthened as we
stand in the lengthening shadows of saints down through the
centuries, who have always answered back in antiphonal voice"
He is risen, indeed". Quote
by Charles Swindoll
Susan Mangatal
Greetings On-Line Family
and Happy Easter to
all of you.
This past
Wednesday, April 4th, 39 years ago was the saddest day in
American history. This was the day the life of a great man
and a great leader was selfishly taken. Rev. Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. was gunned down by James Earl Ray in Memphis,
Tennessee, while he was preparing to lead a march for sanitation
workers protesting against low wages and poor working
conditions. He was shot as he stood on a hotel
balcony and died soon thereafter.
This was the day
all of America, actually all black Americans and many around the
world cried and mourned for this exceptional man who contributed
to the civil rights movement, who was successful in turning
protests into crusades and to translating local conflicts to
moral issues nationwide, and ultimately worldwide. This
man with his non-violent leadership and tactics succeeded with
opening America's eyes and successfully breaking the segregation
laws of the south, and most importantly attained racial and
economic justice for blacks.
On this sad day
many cried, while others expressed their emotion by angrily
exploding. 100s of United States cities, and Dozens
of major U.S. cities such as Washington DC, Chicago, Los
Angeles, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, New York, etc. was
rocked by an escalation in race riots.
On this sad day
President Lyndon Johnson addressed the nation by saying "I
ask every citizen to reject the blind violence that has taken
Dr. King who lived by
non-violence".
On this sad day,
and the sad hours and days to follow, due to these riots several
people lost their lives, several thousands were injured, large
amounts of our businesses were set ablaze, and their were lots of
lootings and shootings. Black America was clearly very
angry about the assassination of their black civil rights leader
and it was too much for many to bear. Many from Dr.
King's team addressed the nation and repeatedly appealed for
calm and even urged folks to respect our murdered leader's
commitment to non-violent protest. However others were
hurt and was deeply angry such as Lincoln Lynch the United Black
Front Chairman, he felt black America should adopt a new stance
and stated "it is imperative to abandon the unconditional
non-violent concept expounded by Dr. King and adopt the position
that for every Martin Luther King who falls, 10 white racists
will go down with him" he further stated "there
is no other way America understand no other language"
As a result
curfews were implemented in many areas around the country and
the National Guard soldiers were mobilized to help with the
violence which was threatening to engulf the US in this race
war.
On this day -
April 4th, 39 years ago in 1968 was indeed the saddest day for
all Black Americans and many around the world, it was the
beginning of a dark period in our lives and in American History,
and a day we all will never forget. Folks felt their only
hope for racial economic and justice, as well as equality for
all in America was taken away.
Dr. King's life
was not taken in vain though, because many of his dreams indeed come
true...we do have equal rights!!!!
As I think
further though and analyze this crime epidemic which is plaguing
our communities, I am afraid that some of what he worked
for are surly "chipping" away.

Before
I close out, let me share an important issue that is taking
place regarding Sir Elton John headlining the 2nd Plymouth Jazz
Festival taking place in Tobago at the end of this month.
Sir Elton John, pop/ rock singer,
composer, pianist, multi Grammy and Academy award winner recently
celebrated his 60th birthday in New York City at Madison Square
Garden. Sir Elton John is also slated to headline the Plymouth
Jazz Festival in Tobago at the end of this month, along with Diana
Ross, Mary J. Blige and Earth, Wind & Fire, and several
other very popular artists. However,
his appearance is citing a lot of controversy throughout the twin
islands - from Conservative Groups on the islands who are fighting to
have Sir Elton John banned from performing at the festival due to
his openly gay lifestyle. Heading the campaign against
Elton John is Archdeacon Philip Isaac for Trinidad and Tobago said
Elton John's lifestyle does not conform to "biblical teachings."
"He
needs to be ministered unto," Isaac said. "His
visit to the island can open the country to be tempted towards
pursuing his lifestyle."
Festival executive Anthony Maharaj
said the singer's performance and his private life should be
mutually exclusive, adding that John's concert would proceed even if
church groups protest outside the event, the Independent said. "Elton John is coming as
what he is, one of the world greatest performers," Maharaj
said. "He is not coming here to preach about what lifestyle
people should have."
Below you will find a recently
written article for Trinidad's Sunday Guardian about this
interesting controversy by our attorney and friend from Trinidad Mr.
Martin George. Go ahead and check out his article below and
let us know your thoughts ariousentertainment@earthlink.net.

WELCOME
SIR ELTON
by
Martin George
I
have deliberately chosen not to comment as yet on the
Chief Justice/Chief Magistrate conflagration, preferring
to wait until a bit more information is revealed and
opting to let the other commentators, soothsayers and
political pundits have their say at this time.
...
...
On a lighter note however, I
will give my thoughts and views on the protests and
objections which have been made against the impending
visit of Sir Elton John to our shores. This proposed
visit has been denounced by some misguided, misinformed
and mischievous persons in Tobago, led by a rag-tag,
pick-up side of deposed ex-Politicians, preachers,
protagonists and agents provocateur.
These
persons have raised their voices in protest against Sir
Elton John as the headline act for the Plymouth Jazz
Festival which Festival has set the standard across the
region as far as the quality of high caliber acts it
attracts each year, due in no small part to the financial
backing of CL Financial and in this regard we have indeed
blazed a trail and have left others in the region reeling
in our wake. What then is the fundamental basis for these
objections to Sir Elton John coming here? If he was coming
here simply as a visitor to holiday in Tobago, would these
persons still be protesting? The protestors who apparently
have little else to do with their time and talents, are
protesting primarily because of his lifestyle and because
he is a gay man who has been open about his feelings in
this regard. Their spurious argument goes on to suggest
that he will negatively influence and corrupt the morals
of citizens by his mere presence here.
Separate
and apart from the fact of these protestors making moral
and other judgments and indictments, it is such a patently
false and fallacious argument, because it ignores the fact
that we have on a daily basis thousands of gay people
living, working, existing, creating and being productive
and successful members of the society here in T&T, and
this applies to Tobago also, there are gay people living,
working and existing in Tobago too. So what's the big deal?
Are we as a nation seeking to regress to an openly
homophobic stance whereby we shun and eschew all gay
people and begin treating them as outcasts? If so, then we
would lose hundreds of our media workers, in television,
print and radio. We would also lose some of our more
talented and creative persons in the arts, entertainment
and service industry. We would lose some of our doctors,
lawyers, accountants, judges, teachers and preachers. Yes
preachers too, so those preachers who are protesting
better start looking amongst their own for the beam in
their own eyes before they start looking for the mote in
others. Who can forget the contentious and highly
fractious appointment last year of openly gay Bishop Gene
Robinson in the Anglican Church? So lets stop pretending,
the point is that there are those among us who choose an
alternate lifestyle and the rest of us ought to not target
or harass them simply for that. Our society has developed
to the stage where there are so many gay people who work,
live and play side by side with us that it really become
ridiculous to object to Elton Johns presence simply
because he is also gay.
Some
of the pastors and preachers who are protesting need to
examine their own hearts, souls and minds and realize that
when Jesus came onto the earth, he welcomed and embraced
those whom society may otherwise have shunned and treated
as an outcast, Mary Magdalene, the prostitute, Zacharay,
the Tax Collector, he interacted with the deaf, the dumb,
the blind and the lame. Jesus did not discriminate then
and he certainly would not discriminate now so who are
these Pastors and preachers really following as their role
model? One can understand if as a statement, they say that
their personal choice is that they eschew and disapprove
of the gay lifestyle and don't want it for themselves,
their children or their friends and relatives, but it is
another thing to be openly discriminatory of persons
simply because of the fact that they are gay, when they
are just going on about their own business lawfully and
not interfering with anyone. This is irrational and not
acceptable. Jamaica is openly homophobic like that and
Jamaicans accept that it is okay to engage in gay bashing
and gay beatings and the like, but Trinidad and Tobago is
not a society like that and we really should not gravitate
towards that type of stance.
We
all enjoy a Minshall production, a Wendell Manwarren
performance and a Richard Ragoobarsingh or Raymond Choo
Kong play, why cant we similarly enjoy an Elton john
concert without making moral judgments on the lifestyle of
the artiste? It is quite a hypocrisy because we have grown
up on his music and enjoyed it over all the years, in Lion
King, on television and in music videos knowing full
well that he was gay, so how come this suddenly becomes an
issue? We have known for decades that Elton John and
Bernie Taupin have been the most prolific and successful
songwriting duo of the Twentieth Century with hits such as
Border Song, Rocket Man, Come Down in Time, Crocodile
Rock, Daniel, Levon, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me,
Sacrifice, Burn Down the Mission and Tonight among others
and we did not enjoy the music any less because Elton was
gay.
Sir
Elton has made us laugh, he has made us cry, he has
entertained us, teased us, thrilled and outraged us over
time and his signature flamboyant outfits and outlandish
sunglasses have been his trademark and his imprimatur as
much as his high quality excellent music over the
generations. He is coming here to perform his music and no
matter what we think of his chosen lifestyle, we can still
appreciate his music and have a good time and it is
certainly a bonus, a boon and a boost to the Plymouth Jazz
Festival that they can get him here to perform for us, and
all of T&T should indeed say, Welcome Sir Elton.
