WHAT'S HAPPENING By: Todd Mangatal

Last week started out as a normal week for us at Arious Entertainment until I received a call from my sister (Shana Mangatal) in Los Angeles who stated that her good friend Michael Jackson was in Washington DC to receive an award, and they wanted us (Arious) to attend the ceremony, so we could share it with all in our On-line family.  With that information the rest of the week was filled with excitement.  On Wednesday we received the official call from Grace (Mike's Assistant who has played a major role in coordinating this events) inviting us to be Mike's personal guest at this ceremony "The African Ambassadors' Spouses Association Honors Mr. Michael Jackson".  Grace proceeded to take our names and assured us that we would be placed on Mike's guest list.  She further stated that we should arrive at 6:30 pm

We arrived at the Ethiopian Embassy around 7:30 pm, worrying that we had missed the entire presentation.  To our surprise we were unable to park near the Embassy, because they had the entire perimeter blocked off to traffic, so we found parking 3 blocks away from the perimeter.  When we arrived at the security perimeter it truly looked like it was going to be an exciting evening.  The security was "tight...George Bush style) like we would say in the dancehall.  There were DC police, Secret Service, Undercover, and even the Nation of Islam was on the job.  Once we reached the first security check point, we saw a large group of fans across the street with signs in support of Michael.  Of course at this first check point we had to produce IDs.  From there we proceeded a block to another check point where they asked our names and our IDs once again.  After we were confirmed as Michael's guests we proceeded approx. 3 more blocks to the 3rd Check point, where they checked our names one more time.  We then proceeded to the Embassy where we were first greeted by a local TV Crew - Channel 9, who stopped us and asked  for an interview.  We agreed and was interviewed.

Upon arriving inside the Embassy we were greeted with a hug from Jamie Brown, Editor of "Sister To Sister", who commented about us always being everywhere something important was happening.  After our name was checked off yet another time, we entered the Grand Hall of the Embassy.

In the Grand Hall we were entertained by traditional African drummers and dancers.  A grand buffet was laid out, along with waiters serving hors d'oeuvres.  Additionally, there were an assortment of wines and soft drinks being served.  Of course, we took advantage of the wines.  The place was filled with news people, lots of photographers, along with a small intimate crowd of invited guests, which was really nice, so we began mingling.  We met Ambassadors, Congressmen, Activists, "Who's who in DC" and many more.

To our surprise many people in attendance knew us (They are a part of our On-line community.)  One lady in particular, Dr. Edna Gorham Bey affectionately known as "Queen Mother" indicated that we have helped her in the past through our e-mail marketing and promotions, with her mission to uplift fallen humanity and  "Save The Children"  project.  We had never met, and she was very pleased to finally meet us and thanked us in person for our help.  She gave us a CD called "Who will Save The Children" which we enjoyed!  Another surprise was meeting a member of the Congressional Staff who recognized us and introduced himself.  He told us that they even get our e-mails in Congress.  That really made us feel that we are doing something worthwhile and are truly reaching the people.

Michael arrived at about 9:00 pm and before he made his grand entrance, a video was shown which featured many highlights of Michael's career.  Once he entered you could feel the energy and excitement in the room.  I see why they call him a "SUPER STAR".  The Children from the African Nations did many performances, but what sticks out in our minds was how beautifully they sang "We are the World", that was very nice.

Michael received the award, made a short speech, and welcomed Grace to say a few more words on their behalf.   After the closing remarks by the wife of Nigerian Ambassador (Ms. Diatta), Michael personally met and talked to many of us, and posed for photographs with many of the African Ambassador's wives and their Children.

This was a great evening...just being personally invited, and being a part of such an important historic event.  This has brought many things to our attention which we had not thought about.  Such as the Aids problem that is not only plaguing Africa, but the Caribbean as well.  We applaud the efforts of Michael Jackson in his humanitarian works.  You may not be aware that Michael has supported and has given over $50,000,000 worldwide to charities in his lifetime, including The United Negro College Fund, Childhelp USA, Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation, The Carter Center's Atlanta Project, AIDS Project L.A., Make-A-Wish Foundation, TransAfrica, The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, The Brothman Burn Center, Cities and Schools Scholarship Fund, Children's International, and Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, and The "We are the World" Project.  Michael has done so much over the years, and I'm sure we will be doing our part to assist in many of these important efforts in the future, and we ask that you join us and help make this a better world for all of us.
