June - Celebrate Black Music Month

Proclamation by the President of United States for Black Music Month

...During Black Music Month, we recognize the outstanding contributions that African-American singers, composers, and musicians have made to our country, and we express our appreciation for the extraordinary music that has enriched our nation.

The music of African-American musicians has helped shape our national character and become an important part of our musical heritage.  Often born out of great pain and strong faith, that music has helped African Americans endure tremendous suffering and overcome injustice with courage, faith, and hope.  By speaking to the human experience and expressing heartfelt emotion, African-American artists have inspired people across the generations in America and around the world with their vision and creativity.

This month is an opportunity to honor the men and women who have created some of the best America has ever produced...We remember so many wonderful artists and celebrate the achievements of black musicians whose work reflects the diversity of our citizens and lists the human spirit.

George W. Bush

One woman who I admire and who I would like to acknowledge this Black Music month is Ms. Suzanne de Passe because she has done a lot for Black Music, she (1) developed artists and music that made a major impact in the history of music, and (2) I would like to celebrate her during this Caribbean Heritage Month because I've come to learn she is of Jamaican Ancestry.

Ms. de Passe was an executive at Motown Records during the Motown Era in the 1970s, and who was hired by the owner of Motown Records Barry Gordy.  Ms de Passe is responsible for signing, coaching and developing Motown's most popular acts of the 70s.  This successful company (Motown) that Ms. de Passe was a part of, packaged the intellectual and creative talent of young minds and defined black music for the époque.  At Motown Ms. de Passe and the entire Motown team signed contracts, really created personalities and made wonderful music and stars such as Smokey Robinson, the Miracles, the Supremes (Diana Ross), The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and many, many other popular groups that turned out hits after hits.  Ms. de Passe was part of a legendary music company "Motown" which was a successful black-owned business and the sound that came out of the Motown camp called the "Motown Sound" have become legendary in the music business.

While at Motown Ms. de Passe co-wrote and produced television specials such as: "Lady Sings the Blues", "TCB" and "G.I.T on Broadway", as well as "Motown 25".  In recent years, Ms. de Passe acquired Motown Productions from Berry Gordy and renamed it de Passe Entertainment, and her company has since produced television shows and feature films such as Class Act, Sister-Sister, Smart Guy and "It's Showtime at the Apollo.  Her company has also produced the miniseries "The Jacksons: An American Dream, "The Temptations and the Motown 45 special in 2004.  This weekend on Saturday the 23rd,  the Caribbean Heritage Organization of Los Angeles will honor and pay tribute to Ms. de Pass for her accomplishments.  This event is co-sponsored by the Institute of Caribbean Studies.

logoCAHM.jpg (52967 bytes)  As we continue Celebrating National Caribbean-American Heritage Month (June)"During Caribbean-American Heritage Month, we celebrate the great contributions of Caribbean-Americans to the fabric of our Nation, and we pay tribute to the common culture and bonds of friendship that unite the United States and the Caribbean countries"                    George W. Bush

ConfCaribbean.jpg (41173 bytes)  On Tuesday the Conference on the Caribbean - A 20/20 Vision kicked off.  This Conference is the result of a series of meetings between officials from both the US and CARICOM (Caribbean Community and Common Market).  The main purpose for this conference was to (1) strengthen the existing relationship between the United States and the Caribbean Community, (2) to develop a vision of the future relationship between the two, and (3) to focus on a way to forward to achieving the various developmental objectives for the Caribbean.

Resulting from this conference the Caribbean Community hoped to strengthen its relationship with the United States at all political levels and to further improve its relations with the Caribbean Diaspora in the US to encourage the Diaspora and friends of the Caribbean to support regional development.

For these past few days several important forums and sessions took place on several different issues.  Such as  (1) Caribbean Diaspora in Perspective, (2) Challenges and Opportunities for the Caribbean-US Diaspora, (3) Addressing Quality and Equity in Social Development, and even on (4) Health and Gender Issues.  There was also a (1) Private Sector Dialogue on US-Caribbean Trade Opportunities for Growth, and lots more.

One important Diaspora Forum took place on Tuesday where Caribbean Nationals had an opportunity to address their concerns and questions to Caribbean Heads of State.  Also, an Art Exhibition opened at the Organisation of American States, Hall of Heroes by President of Haiti, H.E. Rene Preval, and on Tuesday evening an awesome concert took place at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts which featured a free concert by multi-platinum Grammy award-winning sensation Wyclef Jean, Reggae Grammy Award Winner - Superstar "Shaggy", The legendary Jamaican ska group the "Ska-Talites, Jimmy Cliff, and Plunky & Oneness a Richmond based jazz-funk band.  I'm glad to say this concert had an overwhelming turnout, which was absolutely wonderful to see.  Actually, in my opinion it was one of the biggest attendance I've seen in this area in some time.

Everything was brought to a close today as the last forum was on CARICOM Development in the 21st Century: The way forward, and from all the reports, this Conference was extremely successful.

There are still lots of celebrations and events taking place around the United States observing and commemorating National Caribbean-American Heritage Month!!!  Please check our "Caribbean-American Heritage Events" Page for all the events, and continue checking  our "Events" Page for what's going on in your area.  There are several events listed currently.

DC Carnival Breakfast Fete 07logo.jpg (35948 bytes)  This Sunday, June 24th instead of singing "we nah going home till morning come", we will be changing it to "we nah going home till evening come", because the "fete-ing" will continue with JC Entertainment and Caribbean Vibrations as they host their 2nd Annual Last Lap Breakfast Fete.  Yes, once you finish all your jumping and "whinin", you will need food, so this is the place to be.   This Original Last Lap Breakfast Fete will take place on Sunday, June 24, 2007 from 5 am to 2 pm.  It is sure to be a very sweet Caribbean Lime. Just added to the line-up is "Radioactive" from Trinidad. image003.jpg (608804 bytes)     This Sunday @ 7:00 pm plan on spending a delightful time chilling out with Mr. Von Martin at his annual Caribbean comedy festival.  Mr. Martin is the host of the popular Caribbeana Radio Program which is broadcast on WPFW every Saturday from 7pm to 10pm.  This comedy festival was originated 19 years ago to celebrate Mr. Martin's radio show "Caribbeana" (which is celebrating 30 years).  The Comedy Festival will again take place this year at Howard University's Cramton Auditorium beginning at 7:00 pmClick here to view the Press Release and the Flyer you will find under our "Featured Events" below (scroll down) as well as on the "Events" Page!!!

Before I bring my commentary to a close for this week, we would like to Congratulate the winners of the 2007 Pan Masters Steel Orchestra Annual DC Calypso Monarch which was held last Friday (June 15th).  The winners are:  First Place - Selwyn Demming "Bro Marvin"; 2nd Place - Randolph Hilaire "Count Robin"; and 3rd Place - Mervyn Carter "Dr. Witty"  Again Congratulations to the winners and to Panmasters for another successful event.  Todd and I had another commitment and was unable to attend, but many of our friends attended and everyone seem to have had a great time.  From the report we received from the Panmasters camp as well as all the reports we received from friends, it was a sellout crowd and everyone loved the competition and had a wonderful time.  We look forward to next years' competition.  "Big Up" to Mr. Hollis "Flash" Lashley we understand you were "off the hook" and did a great job hosting this event, as you do at all the events you host...."Big Up"

Scroll down to our "Featured Events" and you can check our "Events" Page as well!
