It's
time to Celebrate June - National Caribbean-American Heritage
Month "Caribbean
Americans have made lasting contributions to our Nation's culture
and history, and the month of June has been set aside to honor
their cultural, linguistic, ethnic, and social diversity.
Generations
of immigrants have preserved the traditions of their homelands,
and these traditions have defined our Nation's identity. Caribbean
Americans bring a unique and vibrant culture. This multilingual
and multiethnic tradition has strengthened our social fabric and
enriched the diversity of our Nation" by President Barack
H. Obama
National
Caribbean-Heritage Month is a time to celebrate, recognize, pay
tribute and commemorate Caribbean-American Heritage. Indeed
it is a time to:
-
Celebrate the
great contributions of Caribbean-Americans to the economic,
social and cultural landscape of the United States.
-
Recognize the
many contributions of Caribbean immigrants and their decedents
to the well-being of America.
-
Celebrate the
historic relationships between the people of the Caribbean and
the people of the United States.
-
Pay tribute to
the common culture and bonds of friendship that unite the
United States and the Caribbean countries. (The vibrancy and
hopefulness due to the talent, faith and values of
Caribbean-Americans)
-
Commemorate
Caribbean-American heritage, history, culture and
contributions to the United States.
-
Recognize how
Caribbean-Americans enriches society by being leaders in
government, arts, entertainment, sports, fashion, poetry,
theatre, in businesses and much more.

In
Recognition of Caribbean Heritage Month
You are cordially
invited to a short program highlighting Caribbean literature and
culture
2:00 p.m. at
the Silver Spring Public Library on Colesville Road.
Caribbean storytellers and
authors will share their work as they showcase and explain
Caribbean culture. Participants include Dr. Carmen Bovell
(Guyana), Jillian Moore-Quashie (Tobago), Gabriel Christian, Esq.
(Dominica), Dr. Brenda DoHarris (Guyana), Dr. Carmen Subryan
(Guyana), former Ambassador, Dr. J. Edsel Edmunds (St. Lucia).
Please come out and support our Caribbean authors. We know about
the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans because they documented their
history and wrote about their culture. It's time for us to write
and embrace our own history and showcase our cultures. The program
is hosted by the Caribbean American Advisory Group in
collaboration with the Office of Community Partnerships attached
to the Office of the Montgomery County Executive.

June 8th, of National Caribbean-American
Heritage Month in the United States is an annual observance of
National Caribbean American HIV/AIDS Awareness. NCAHAAD is a
national mobilization effort designed to encourage
Caribbean-American and Caribbean-born individuals, across the
United States and its territories, to get educated, get tested,
get treated and get involved. It is also a time to reflect,
memorialize and show compassion for those infected or affected by
HIV/AIDS. It is a day of hope for the future of a Caribbean and
Caribbean American community with available preventive health care
as a daily part of life and a Caribbean Diaspora free of AIDS.
