What's Going On? By Todd Mangatal (todd@ariousentertainment.com) The Caribbean carnival season is heating up in DC. Things are getting really exciting, everywhere you go in the Caribbean community the talk is Carnival. As you know after 10 years in the same location the Carnival has had to move to downtown DC because of growth and safety concerns. Which in my opinion is the best thing that could happen for the DC Caribbean Carnival. This is not only good for the Carnival but if supported and managed properly this move will be beneficial to the entire Caribbean community. D C Carnival is supposedly the 3rd largest outdoor event in DC attracting over 500,000 people. But since it had been located in the heart of the our community or (as we say "on the Ave.") it has not received the type of Media attention as the other so-called major festival & events that take place in the city. This is an opportunity to showcase the culture of the Caribbean to a broader market and create interest in the Caribbean. Last Sunday the Organizers of the DC Caribbean Carnival (DC Caribbean Carnival, Inc) kicked off 2 weeks of Carnival in DC at their 3rd Annual Pre-Carnival Cocktail Sip at one of my favorite venues, Zanzibar on the Waterfront in SW Washington DC. This was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. The weather in DC hasn't been the best this spring, but the rain held off making for a great day on the waterfront. Zanzibar is one of the most creatively decorated restaurant & Club in DC with 3 levels. The sip was held on the 2nd level which was great because we overlooked the Potomac River and the SW Marina. At 6pm DJ Wayne started the evening off with just the right mix of music. It was great to see some of the bandleaders come out and show their costumes & presentations. In the house was Pan Masters, Stephmus Productions & Roots & Culture. Big up! Also in the house was some members of our online community Rico & JBonnie taking video shots for Rico's yearly DC Carnival Video. The evening was hosted by Tony Carr from WPFW (89.3FM "Rhythms of the world" Thursday 11pm to 12am). Tony did a great job of keeping the evening moving. Keith Preddie a member of the DCCC board offered a great Pan Solo, and many local merchant sponsored door prizes (West Indian Record Mart, Caribbean Delight, Crown Bakery, Caribbeana Comedy Festival & Arious Entertainment). Additionally, the organizers (DCCC) sponsored tickets to the up coming carnival events (Pan Jam and DiManche Gras). Later in the evening DJ Smalley (The Golden Touch) arrived from Baltimore. At this point I think everyone was getting into the carnival spirit, the place started to come alive. I see why they call him the golden touch, he does have that touch! Check Smalley's Boat ride out on July 5th in Baltimore, Arious will be there. Bobby's Music machine come thru after Smalley, and the party was on. When the lights came on at midnight people were still jumping and asking for one more...one more...one more. I had the opportunity to meet many of you from our online community, and that was a pleasure. Beautiful Mrs. Terrianne Small, the 2003 Mrs. Trinidad and Tobago International Queen, participated by meeting and greeting many from our Community. It was such a joy having such a beauty at this event. She gave a brief message about herself and her platform. Look out for her this Carnival Season, because she is expected to be in attendance to many of the Carnival events/festivities. She is seeking sponsorships for herself and her platform, so please support! Shurla Samual (Caribbean Delight), was a tremendous help to the Carnival Committee. She kept things under control at the door, and all around. Big Up and Many...Many Thanks to you Shurla! Your friend (Susan) really appreciates it! Big up & Respect to the "Posse" who would not go home, they were partying and enjoying themselves so much, they just didn't want to stop. Actually, they were practically "kicked" out of the place. Tell me why Trinis don't like to go home? Much luv to all of them though! When I have my event, the whole crew will be my guest. Big Up Everyone that didn't want the sip to end! It was nice to see Bajan C, Rico, J Bonnie, Knockboys Crew, Jerry, Garage Boy Posse, Ice Entertainment. I think Zanzibar has some of the sexist Bartenders in DC, and I know others will agree (right Emlyn?). Big up To the Management & Staff of Zanzibar, Mr. Green, Ritchie & Tony...Thanks. In addition to all the fun at the sip, Zanzibar kicked of their Sunday Beach Party complete with sand, Volley Ball, Bar B Q and the Bartenders were attired in Bikinis, Plus reggae & hip hop music. Oh yah, my friend EZ Street from WPGC 95.5 was in the place. So if you're looking for something different on a Sunday evening, remember Zanzibar on the Waterfronts Beach Bash. Check their Website for more info www.zanzibar-otw.com This week the fun continues, beginning tonight with the Masquerade and Steel Pan bands drawing numbers for the parade order. By the way, there are about 14 bands in the parade (I will hit you back next week with the order). One thing the bandleaders decided to do this year (which I thought was smart) was placing 2 steel pan bands at the beginning of the parade and 2 at the end. This is important because it will slow the parade down, and will eliminate some of the gaps that has been experienced in the past. Most importantly, steel pan is the traditional instrument of carnival, and it is important for it to be showcased as much as possible throughout the parade. I know this has been an issue here in DC with some of the pan groups, but I think in the long run it will be a plus for steel pans. Which is such an important part of the Carnival. This week we have something for all taste, when it comes to Caribbean entertainment. Friday Night is the Calypso Monach Finals Competition, which is one of Pan Masters Events. This event is truly becoming one of the highlights of the DC Carnival. This year there are 7 finalists + last years winner Dr. Witty. No tickets will be sold at the door, so check below for the ticket outlets, and get yours now. Last year was a sell out. Saturday All roads lead to the Crossroads for the DC Carnival Annual Pan Jamboree. 7 Pan groups will be performing, a few from out of town and several from here locally. This really brings out the sound of Carnival, and for those of you who have not had an opportunity to hear the sweet sounds of Pan live, you are in for a treat. All Pan lovers and supporters, please come out and support this event. Mr. Emlyn Harewood has been working hard for the last 3 years building this event, and bringing Pan back to the Carnival. The fun continues on Sunday with the 3rd Annual DiManche Gras show, which is the judging of the Kings, Queens, and Individuals costumes. At this event you will experience the beauty of Carnival. Both events are $5.00. Check below for more information. If Carnival is not your thing, KAH Entertainment is bringing something different to town. It's the stage play "Same Song, Different Tune" staring Leonnie Ford, and Shelley Thunder. If you are in to plays, please give KAH Entertainment some support, because to build a strong community, we need all types of entertainment and culture to be showed Hope to see many of you at these events.
