Greetings
On-Line Family:
Reggae
Legend and lovers rock singer Beres Hammond was in town
on Thursday (7/30/09), and what an incredible show it
was. Actually, this is our 2nd time seeing Beres
perform this month, and both times he was
excellent. His sweet, smooth, melodious and romantic voice mesmerizes
you, and indeed the lyrics to his song “Good Ole
Dancehall Vibes” rings true meaning.
There was certainly enough vibes in the place and
everyone was rocking and dancing to his songs, which was
truly wonderful to see.
Beres
voice is impeccable, simply pure and natural, absolutely
no auto tune, which is very popular in every genre of
music today. (the computerization of one’s voice to
correct the pitch, disguise inaccuracies and any flaws,
and to deliberately distort the human voice).
Therefore, it’s a pleasure seeing Beres and hearing
him sing so many of his lovely songs.
Once
the show began, we found in our location the sound was
not up-to-par. However, as we re-situated ourselves and ascended to several
floors above the stage, we discovered the sound was
crystal clear and fantastic (due to most of the speakers
being suspended from
the ceiling and was located at just about the same level
we were.)
Oh
dear…from the moment Beres walked on stage singing,
the crowd became wild and welcomed him with a thunderous
applause, and as he sang his songs the crowd sang along
with him note for note.
Gosh, the vibe he and his band created was the
nicest, making it one of the most incredible nights I
have had at a concert in a long time.
Indeed, I felt as if I was at a good ole
dancehall with excellent music and great vibes.
The
songs he sang was done in a sensual and smooth manner,
and of course his lyrics touches the soul and is
extremely pleasurable to one’s heart and mind.
I lost count of how many songs he actually sang
from his 18 albums, but in our world they are all hits.
He
continuously built the vibe with songs such as: “What
One Dance Can Do”; Double Trouble”; “Step
Aside”; “Doctor’s Orders (I feel a shiver)”;
“Sweetness”; “I Could Beat Myself”; “Queen and
a Lady” Can’t Stop A Man”; “Can You Play Some
More”; “Rockaway”; “Dancehall Vibes”;
"Who Say"; “They Gonna Talk”; “Putting
up a resistance”; No Disturb Sign”; and “Love
Means Never To Say You’re Sorry”, just to name a
few. Unfortunately,
he didn’t sing two of my favorite songs “Come
Down Father” and “Sweet Lies", but
he certainly made up for it by performing so many other
hit songs. I
must say Beres's back-up singers “The Harmony House
Singers” were fantastic, as well as their different
movements and dances for each song he/they performed.
Most importantly, his band was "top notch" and
performed unbelievably. An exciting moment in the
show was when lead singer Kenyetta Hill of the opening
act "Culture" appeared on stage with Beres and
performed Buju Banton's part on the song I believe is
called "Who Say". That was awesome!
Some
months ago I
was happy and proud to hear that the most popular
national
syndicated Radio Show owner and host Micheal Baisden heard and
fell in love with Beres’s music, and asked him to
perform at his Island Jam Take Over in Jamaica in late
June. I understand his performance
there was great too. I believe there is no
stopping Beres now, he is truly on his way to success in
the mainstream media (thanks to Mr. Baisden),
and most importantly to Beres for his hard work and
commitment to his music and fans!
Without
a doubt Beres Hammond is an exceptional singer, and is
truly one of the best reggae singers. His
performance too is always excellent. Therefore, if you hear
that he will be in your town for a concert, you must do
everything in your power to attend.
He is truly superb!

As I
close, I want to make a brief comment regarding the
racial profiling incident and arrest of Professor Henry
Louis Gates, Jr. that occurred 2 weeks ago. First
off, I am disappointed that our President has
back-tracked on his statement regarding this
issue. What he did by expressing his feelings
openly at the outset, has brought this issue to the
forefront and got
people talking about it. Yet he has backed away from his
initial comments.
It is
quite evident that most of America simply does not
understand this issue, does not understand that racial
profiling happens on a regular basis to a high
percentage of blacks, and does not understand why the
Professor reacted the way he did during this unpleasant
experience.
However
it's all simple, the Professor acted like any other man
or woman in the same situation. They are shocked, horrified,
confused, irritated, angry, and they just can't
comprehend or believe what is taking
place. Most importantly, they are and feel
extremely powerless (especially when they realize
they can't do anything about what is
transpiring.) Everything is stripped
away from them at that horrible moment, because in
their heart and mind they know who they are and their position in society. But the person
administering the horrible treatment doesn't
care who they are dealing with, instead they
have already made a determination about them (profiling
them) because of their race.
In my
opinion the Professor's actions are explainable, anyone
would become highly upset if they are treated like a
criminal in their own home, and will indeed
express it verbally. The questions in my mind
are:: (1) Once the police officer determined that the
professor was not breaking into the house and that it
was his own home, why did it not come to an end
immediately with him leaving the premises?
(2) Why was it so threatening to the officer that the
Professor insisted on getting his name and badge number;
(3) Why was the Professor arrested in his own home for
expressing his feelings, and why is it an offense for a
man/women to become angry and express their feelings,
while being disrespected and treated like a criminal (don't
forget in their own home)? Most importantly
(4) why can't many in America understand the
magnitude of this problem and this situation... why can't
they understand that this takes place regularly?
NEWSFLASH
people...it happens every day!!!! It only took
this Professor's incident to bring it to light. Thank God he talked about it to the
media, and the President commented about it during a
Press Conference.
Well, I
hope Thursday (7/30/09) "beer summit" with
Professor Gates, Officer Crawley, President Obama and
Vice President Biden made a difference, as everyone
hoped. I'm just happy that there are lots of
discussions about this all across America.
Please
feel free to share your thoughts and possible experience
with me regarding this racial profiling issue at:
