Greetings On-Line Family:

Celebrate indeed...we must celebrate all our favorite athletes on their outstanding winnings as they compete in the various Olympic games.

Yup, the XXIX Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, is electrifying, and if you are from the Caribbean mainly Jamaica you are ecstatic about the winnings of the Jamaican track athletes (Male and Females).  Usain Bolt is exceptional, and the women track athletes Melaine Walker, Shelly-Ann Fraser, Sherone Simpson, Karron Stewart, Shericka Williams, and Veronica Campbell-Brown all are excellent.

Not to mention how happy I am about Trinidad's Richard Thompson placing 2nd in the Men's 100m race winning the silver medal.  (The place I was born and still call home - lovely Trinidad).

Bolt,U.JAWinner.jpg (21019 bytes)  Of course, being from the Caribbean I must briefly talk about my favorite winners and "big them up" for a minute.  But first...how about that Usain Bolt?  Truly "the fastest man on earth" (who just turned 22 on August 21st).  He won the 100m on Saturday 8/16/08, and his time was 9.69 seconds - breaking the world record (3 hundredths of a second better than the previous world record.)

UsainBolt.jpg (51072 bytes)  Now, I was not happy about missing the actual race, you see my husband Todd and I were having dinner at a cozy restaurant in Georgetown, WDC, and we noticed everyone at their tables, at the bar, and just standing around every open isle in the restaurant was focused on the TV, but we assumed they were looking at young Michael Phelps record breaker relay race.  Anyway, me not realizing that the 100m race was about to begin, I stepped away from our table to freshen up a bit and unfortunately missed the entire race.  However, while I was away Todd focused on the TV (along with everyone else) and was happy to see Usain Bolt win the 100m race.  Once I got back, through Todd's excitement and amazement of Bolt's performance in this race, he tried to give me a full account of what I missed.  The following is some of what Todd stated:  "That Bolt ran the race so graceful that it actually seemed as though his feet were not touching the ground".  He further explained that Bolt ran similar to the popular cartoon character "The Road Runner".  If you know anything about "The Road Runner", then you know when he runs his legs are always spinning in mid air.  Todd felt Mr. Bolt's legs seemed to be moving in mid air, and it appeared to have never actually touched the ground.  That's how a fantastic runner Mr. Bolt is per Todd's explanation, and I certainly agree!!!

Naturally, I was euphoric about Trinidad's Richard Thompson winning the silver medal in this 100m race in 9.89 seconds.  Hooray and big congratulations to Richard, I know everyone from home and abroad is proud of Mr. Thompson's win!!!

Needless-to-say, on Wednesday 8/20/08 Usain Bolt did it again by winning the 200m and cross the finish line in 19.30 seconds breaking the world record by 2 hundredths of a second less than USA's Michael Johnson (who held the record of 19.32 in the 1996 Atlanta Games.)  There is so much I can say about Bolt, but everyone has said it all.  He is indeed an exceptional athletic, and I congratulate him on winning his 2nd gold medal.  Hooray for Bolt, and as he stated after winning "I am number one", I must say he truly is!

Brown,C.JAWinner2.jpg (10819 bytes)  As for the female athletics from Jamaica, they are superb.  I saw the 100m race where Shelly-Ann Fraser won the gold medal and Sherone Simpson & Karron Stewart picked up the silver medals.  I was truly impressed with their performance...these young ladies are indeed "off the hook".  I sincerely congratulate them, as well as Melanie Walker (1st picture above) for winning the gold medal in the Women's 400m Hurdles in a new time of 52.64 seconds (breaking the current Olympic record), Ms. Veronica Campbell-brown for winning and picking up the gold medal for the 200m (2nd picture above), and Shericka Williams for winning the silver medal in the Women's 400m.

AFP-Olympics-US-swimmer-Michael-Phelps-gold-medal-190_1.jpg (6469 bytes)  Wow, how about Baltimore Maryland's own 23 year old Swimmer Michael Phelps?  He is awesome, and has indeed obtained his goal.  He has broken the most decorated gold medal winner record by winning his unprecedented 8th gold medal over this past weekend.  He is the greatest in his sport currently, and he is certainly "the winningest Olympian in history".  The record was 7 gold medals currently held by Mark Spitz - Congratulations to Phelps on all his wins, he is a great example to kids all over the world, and I'm sure they will try to emulate him from this time forward.  (Picture courtesy of AFP Image).

United States of America is really not ahead in winning gold medals, China is!  However, the US is doing excellent as they continue competing in the various categories at the Beijing Summer Olympics.  They are  in the lead with the amount of medals won: 29 gold, 34 silver, and 32 bronze - totaling 95 medals.  China is close behind with: 46 gold, 15 silver and 22 bronze - totaling 83 medals; and next is Russia with: 16 gold, 16 silver and 19 bronze - totaling 51; and Great Britain is close behind with 17 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze - totaling 40.

As you know the Olympics ends on Sunday 24th, so to continue checking out all the results CLICK HERE to log on and launch the Beijing 2008 Official Olympic Games Website, you will find lots of information, as well as the schedules.

StephanieTubbs-Jones-1.jpg (8736 bytes)  Our sincere condolences to the son, other family members, and friends of Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs-Jones.  We lost Mrs. Tubbs-Jones late on Wednesday afternoon - August 20th, after she suffered a brain (cerebral) aneurysm on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 in Ohio.  She was found unconscious in her car after police noticed she was driving erratically and crossed several lanes of traffic.

Mrs. Tubbs-Jones was the First African-American Woman Elected to the United States House of Representatives from Ohio.

stephanie-tubbs-jones-and-hillary-clinton.jpg (148815 bytes)  You may probably remember Mrs. Tubbs-Jones best for her  outspoken and strong support of Senator Hillary Clinton throughout the democratic primaries earlier this year.  She was very loyal to Senator Clinton and was always beside the Senator at many of the primary contests.

Mrs. Tubbs-Jones was the U.S. House of Representative for the 11th District of Ohio and was reelected four times with no real serious opposition.  She was elected a judge of the Cleveland municipal Court in 1981 and moved on to being Cuyahoga County,  Ohio Prosecutor during the years of 1991 until the early part of 1999.  She was elected to Congress soon thereafter. Mrs. Tubbs-Jones was the co-chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, she was also a Super Delegate.  I'm sure she was very excited about the upcoming Democratic Convention and had planned on attending!!!

Mrs. Tubbs-Jones was a strong advocate for economic development, delivery of health care and quality education for all.  She was also selected by Speaker Nancy Pelosi as chairperson of the House Ethics Committee to watch over the standards of ethical conduct for the members of the House.

She is proceeded in death by her husband of 27 years Mervyn, Sr. (died in 2003), and she is survived by her son Mervyn Jones, Jr.

Ironically, what I found strange from all my research was one source pointed out that Stephanie Jones-Tubbs was the second close associate of Hillary Clinton to die unexpectedly in the past week.  The first was Bill Gwatney, the Arkansas Democratic Party Chairman who was murdered in his office by a gunman a week ago.

Below are some condolences expressed by the President, and other Political Candidates:

President and Mrs. Bush Saddened by Death of Chairwoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones

Laura and I are saddened by the death of Chairwoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones.

As a proud lifelong resident of Ohio's 11th District, she devoted her career to serving her community at both the State and national levels. She was an effective legislator who was dedicated to helping small businesses, improving local schools, expanding job opportunities for Ohioans, and ensuring that more of them have access to healthcare. After making history as the first African American woman elected to Congress from Ohio, the Congresswoman worked to expand the rights of all Americans. Our Nation is grateful for her service.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her son Mervyn Leroy Jones, II and the rest of her family.

Democratic Presidential Nominee, Senator Barack Obama words on the sudden death of Stephanie Tubbs-Jones

"Michelle and I are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones. Stephanie was an extraordinary American and an outstanding public servant. It wasn't enough for her just to break barriers in her own life. She was also determined to bring opportunity to all those who had been overlooked and left behind - and in Stephanie, they had a fearless friend and unyielding advocate. It was an honor to serve with Stephanie in Congress, and I know her legacy will live on in all those who walk the trails she blazed and walk through the doors she opened. Our hearts and prayers are with all those who knew and loved her."

Former President William J. Clinton, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chelsea Clinton on the loss of Stephanie Tubbs-Jones

“There are few words to express the shock we feel at this time. Our deepest condolences are with Stephanie's son, Mervyn, her family, and her many loved ones, friends, and supporters.

Stephanie's friendship meant the world to us, a friendship that deepened through every trial and challenge. We could always count on her to be a shoulder on which to lean, an ear to bend, a voice to reassure. Over the course of many years, with many ups and many downs, Stephanie was right by our side—unwavering, indefatigable.

It was that fighting spirit—safely stowed behind her disarming smile, backed by so much integrity and fiery intelligence—that allowed Stephanie to rise from modest beginnings, to succeed in public service, to become a one-woman force for progress in our country.

All of us who were lucky to know her and love her can only hope now to live like her—to be as passionate, loyal, hard charging, and joyful in life's pursuits.

Stephanie was one of a kind. We will miss our friend always.”

Congressman Chris Van Hollen, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, released this statement on 8/20/08

“Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones was a courageous voice for equality and a fierce advocate for her constituents. As the first African-American woman to represent Ohio in Congress and a preeminent voice in the Congressional Black Caucus, Congresswoman Tubbs Jones spent every day working to make America a more perfect union.

“Whether it was her fight to keep families from losing their homes to foreclosure or to ensure that every vote is counted in our elections, Congresswoman Tubbs Jones approached every battle with passion, grace and determination.

“On behalf of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, I extend my deepest condolences to Congresswoman Tubbs Jones’ son Mervyn, her entire family, many friends and her constituents in Ohio’s 11th Congressional District. I hope it is of some comfort that the thoughts and prayers of so many are with them at this difficult time.”

Regarding Politics I want to thank the many of you who replied to my comment about Senator Clinton's name being nominated for President at the Democratic Convention set to start next week.  Many of your explanations I had already discussed with my husband and friends, but I just felt I needed to put the question out there to you (our on-line family) so that I could get your feedback and thoughts.  I particular thank Jan one of our on-line family member and friend from San Diego, CA, for her great insight; and also to one of my favorite family member from this area Ms. J Bonnie...Thanks to both of you.

The talk of the town is that Senator Obama will be picking his Vice Presidential running mate very soon (in the next day or so).  Despite the 4 candidates the media is reporting who are the top choices: (1) Senator Joe Biden of Delaware; (2) Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana; (3) Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia; & (4) Senator Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas.  My husband Todd told me I should not be surprised if Senator Obama chooses Senator Hillary Clinton.  He feels tactically Senator Obama and his team may think she would be the best person strategically to fill this position.  We have a few days to find out, and I can't wait to know.

Last weekend was so busy for us that we didn't get a chance to view the interviews Reverend Rick Warren of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California conducted with Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain last Saturday 8/16/08 live on CNN.  We did here from various media sources that it seemed Senator McCain was briefed on all the questions before-hand (which should not have taken place), and therefore he was superb at this interview.  We actually, heard that Senator Obama was cool, poised and excellent as well.  So let us know your thoughts if you were able to see it.

*  It's a few more days left before the National Democratic Convention.  It starts on  August 25th and ends on August 28th, 2008.  I can't wait to see this history making event take place.  We will official learn who the Democratic Party officially nominates as its candidates for President and Vice President of the United States.  Obviously Senator Obama (who is the winner of the primary elections and of the delegates and super delegates) will officially be the parties (Democratic) Nomination for President of the United States.

Senator Hillary Clinton is scheduled to speak on Tuesday, August 26th at the Convention, and her husband Former President William Clinton will speak on Wednesday the 27th.

Remember, this year the traditional acceptance will be broken, and what normally takes place at the convention, will be done differently.  Hopefully, all will take place as planned and Senator Obama will be nominated and will accept and address the American people at Denver's INVESCO Field at Mile High in Denver Colorado (a field that can accommodate more than 75,000 people.)

The General Elections are just a few months away - approximately 75 days from today, so to make sure your voice is heard and to be a part of the nations most exciting elections, you must register to vote NOW.  Log on HERE to see the voter registration date deadline for each state, and proceed with registering to vote by logging on HERE, and filling out the registration form at "Rock The Vote.com"(To access the form, click the "Register To Vote" Button from the menu at the top of the page)

For some time now we have been receiving correspondences about West Indians being recognized on the U.S. Census.  A campaign was launched to lobby for a non-Hispanic Caribbean/West Indian category on the U.S. Census, so that Caribbean Nationals would be counted.  See the below Press Release for all the details.

Three Million For West Indian Carnival

But Caribbean Nationals Still Invisible

CaribPR Newswire , NEW YORK , NY , Fri. Aug. 15, 2008: Three million Caribbean nationals are set to descend on Brooklyn ’s Eastern Parkway for the annual West Indian Labor Day Carnival on September 1. But on the national scene, West Indians are largely invisible and forced to lump themselves into either the African American, Asian or Other category on the U.S. Census form despite being distinctly Caribbean in origin.

The inability to accurately self-identify has resulted in Caribbean nationals being ignored by mainstream sponsors and advertisers even as their concerns get dismissed at the political level. Even as Caribbean carnival organizers get ready to celebrate their culture, they are forced to scrounge for sponsors and support annually. Why? Mainly because on the national level, they are largely invisible and their actual numbers is unknown.

Caribbean nationals fed up with this constant `disrespect` are fighting back. A campaign to lobby for a non-Hispanic Caribbean/West Indian category on the U.S. Census has kicked off officially ahead of the annual West Indian Labor Day carnival, in New York City , home to millions of Caribbean immigrants.

`CaribID2010,` a movement initiated by Hard Beat Communications` Felicia Persaud, is a gigantic effort to get Caribbean nationals from the English, Dutch and French-speaking Caribbean who are a melting pot of ethnic groups, secure a category.

The movement is now lobbying for a bill to be introduced into Congress to push for a single line to be added to the form. Currently, nationals who number millions across the U.S., and are from English, Dutch and French-speaking Caribbean nations, are now forced to choose between checking the box misidentifying themselves as either African American, Asian American or Hispanic or simply `Other.`

`The aim is to focus on the root of the problem that has affected us for too long,` said Persaud. `The reality is that without real numbers, the growth of our businesses will continue to be stymied and we will continue to be invisible and to be ignored as the all important bloc that we really are. This is about the economic, social and political future of the Caribbean community in the United States.`

CaribID2010 has so far secured the a number of Caribbean organizations and media houses in the Caribbean American community, including the Caribbean Immigrant Services and CbeanMedia.tv, and are lobbying both Congressman Gregory Meeks and Congresswomen Barbara Lee and Yvette Clarke and the U.S. Congressional Government Reform Committee, which oversees matters of the Census, to introduce a bill that will be the first process to ensure a category becomes a reality.
