On-Line Family and Friends: Greetings
to all of you!
Chilling
is all it has been about these past few days!
And why? Simply,
due to the intensity of a new perspective on life!
LIFE? Of course, we all know what life is! However, to many of us the TIME we spend on building a
comfortable and successful life is absolutely crucial.
We find that our TIME is typically dominated in
various ways: if it’s not work consuming a huge
portion of it; it’s the maintaining of our living
expenses, the worry of our health, or the building and
keeping stable our family and even our love life. And unfortunately the pressures of it all goes on and on.
Generally,
because of this; we somehow miss the greatness of
ourselves…the special person that we are.
Moreover, we develop a misunderstanding about us,
and what we have done.
And most importantly, we forget about all our
accomplishments and even challenges; which results in a
serious lack of appreciation of oneself.
Odd
isn’t it? Due
to the deficiency of our time we are unable to sit back
and reflect on everything on a regular basis; especially
the good and most significant thing we should be aware
of…OUR SELF ~~~ OUR WORTH .
Hum,
this observation hit me “like a ton of bricks”
recently while talking to someone who I can easily call
a friend; [a friend I rarely have artificial dialogue
with] who phoned me to share her experiences over
this past weekend and to discuss things that are
currently transpiring in our community.
After laughing, talking and sharing or
experiences for a bit I found the conversation had moved
into a more serious tone, and we somehow began to share
many of our accomplishments; which I normally don’t
do. However,
something I didn’t expect struck me during our
conversation, and "Ms. C C" afforded me
the special opportunity to reflect on my entire life
thus far. [Gosh~~~LOL, and boy did I share!!!]
I totally surprised myself and couldn’t believe
so much was “bottled up inside me.”
I couldn’t believe how much the outside world
and people have been “beating me up” and “screwing
around” with me mentally; resulting in me not
recognizing my worth and all the good I/we have done. I so needed to hear it~~~to hear OUT LOUD all what my husband
Todd and I had created, developed and accomplished.
Not only what we have accomplished in recent
years, but also what we have accomplished throughout our
lifetime thus far; and "Ms. C C" helped
me achieved this. In
reality, she helped me to truly RECOGNIZE MY WORTH.
Consequently, helping me to feel quite liberated
mentally; and most importantly helping me to find a new
perspective on life. THANK YOU "MS. C C"!!!
After
this experience I clearly saw the importance of
acknowledging one’s worth; and wondered if we have
taken into account how important it is for us to clearly
see the greatness of ourselves, and recognizing how
special a person we are.
Perhaps, if you take the time to reflect on you
and your accomplishments as well as your challenges; you
too will see how important you are…you too will
RECOGNIZE YOUR WORTH!
Below is a lovely poem by an unknown author.
Please read and enjoy!
YOU ARE WORTHY
You
are worthy of reaching for the greatest
accomplishments…
And
you are worthy of achieving them, no matter what
other people think of you, no matter what you
have done up to this point in life.
You
are worthy of the best.
You
are unique, you are special.
You
are creative and effective.
You
have much value to offer, regardless of what
anyone has told you.
And
no one can express that value but you.
You
are the person who deserves to live your dream.
You
are the only one who has what it takes to reach
that dream.
If
you can see it, if you can imagine it, if you
can dream it, you are worthy of reaching it.
And
it is possible.
No
one will hand it to you.
In
fact, you'll strive day and night to reach it.
When
you give the best you have, when you refuse to
be stopped by the obstacles in your way, when
you do what must be done, you'll get what you
deserve—a full, rich life that is like no
other.
Each
day, with your thoughts and actions, live up to
the fact that you are the best.

This
past Tuesday (August 17th) many around the world
celebrated the 123rd birth date of the Powerful
Honorable Marcus "Mossiah" Garvey. Every year I have
honored him by sharing with you some of my thoughts
which was capture in a piece I wrote some years ago [This
piece was published in The Caribbean-American Weekly,
New York, 2007.] Additionally, you will
find I have shared with you a fascinating documentary on
Mr. Garvey entitled "The Influence of Marcus
Garvey", and it details the heroic and innovative
ideas of Marcus Garvey, as well as his life's progress
and achievements. There are 5 parts to this
documentary, and I have added all 5 parts below. Courtesy
of Kane – The Prodigal Son “ProdSun83” and powered
by YouTube.
Marcus
Garvey was born in St. Ann's Bay, St. Ann, Jamaica in 1887, and he
was known as a black Prophet, Philosopher and an
extremely influential speaker. His vision,
which he was determined to carry out was the
liberation of his people. Many believed he was
a Messiah, a true Prophet, giving the prophesy of
the coming of the redeemer who was going to
"deliver the black man from bondage, and who
had come to save a people who for centuries had been
exploited by another race". He promoted
faith in the Almighty Creator of Africa and the
Black race, "who created his Black sons and
daughters in his own image and likeness".
As
I learned more about Garvey, it was clear to see he
gave millions of Caribbean people a sense of pride
and so enabling them to take their place in the
world, Garvey stated "Never allow anyone to
convince you of inferiority as a man. Rise in
your dignity to justify all that is noble in your
manhood/womanhood as a race".
Garvey
dignified African beauty and promoted a "Back
to Africa" campaign with a plan for
resettlement in Liberia. He was truly a
powerful speaker and when he spoke it was
electrifying, he was known to have a "silver
tongue", and with this tongue and the words
that came from his lips he inspired 11 million
people to come into his Association - The
Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), and
African Communities League (ACL). Garvey
organized the UNIA-ACL to promote a spirit of race,
Love and Pride; to administer to and assist the
needy; to reclaim the fallen of the race; to
establish universities, colleges and secondary
schools for the further education and culture of the
boys and girls of the race; and to conduct a
worldwide commercial and industrial intercourse (to
fund a strong Negro nation.) The motto for the
UNIA- ACL was/is "One God! One Aim!
One Destiny", the association sought to unite
"all the people of African ancestry of the
world into one great body to establish a county and
Government absolutely their own." He
promoted a steamship company "The Black Star
Steamship, Co." that would provide
transportation for blacks to return to Africa.
Garvey
traveled everywhere observing the working conditions
and the living conditions of blacks throughout the
region. He visited Costa Rica, Panama,
Ecuador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Columbia,
Venezuela, London, and especially all across the
West Indies; and clearly these poor conditions
saddened him and made him more determined to obtain
his goals. He also witnessed in the West
Indies the petty divisions that divided the islands,
which he spoke about in his lectures and speeches
"...You all know how the different West Indians
despise each other, how the Jamaican despise the
Barbadian and the Barbadian despise the Jamaican,
and all the other islands hate each other. The
UNIA was founded in 1914 after my experience of
travel in South America, in Central America, in all
the West Indian Islands and in Europe seeing the
need for greater unity amongst the black people of
the World." "Therefore, the American
Negroes and the West Indian Negroes are one, and
they are relics of the great African race which was
brought into the Western World and kept here for 400
years".
Marcus
Garvey through his plight to accomplish his goals
endeavored lots of difficulties, as with every
prophet throughout time. Undoubtedly, it
seemed he was loathed, criticized, persecuted,
maligned, scorned, and was even convicted (which his
sentence was commuted by President Coolidge), and
deported, but he stayed strong, held on to his
celestial work with courage, resoluteness and
strength, which enabled him to rise continually from
whatever misfortunes he suffered. He
successfully built and consolidated the UNIA into an
international organization, and because of his
efforts by 1920 the association boasted over 1,100
branches in more than 40 countries (many located in
the US which had become a base for the UNIA), he
also had several branches in Central America and in
the Caribbean countries.)
Marcus
Garvey was truly a good man, that gave hope to a lot
of black people and the black race on a whole.
He is considered in Jamaica a hero and was
proclaimed by Jamaica as its First National Hero.
After his death in 1940, he was laid to rest in
London due to travel conditions during World War II,
however his remains which was exhumed and taken back
to Jamaica now lies at a shrine in National
Heroes Park in Jamaica. I close my piece
on Marcus Garvey with one of his famous proclamation
"Look for me in the whirlwind or the storm,
look for me all around you, for, with God's grace, I
shall come and bring with me countless millions of
black slaves who have died in America and the West
Indies and the millions in Africa to aid you in the
fight for liberty, Freedom and Life."

speech. A mass rally and march will take place on

and we welcome you to join us as we celebrate and
reflect on this important day in history. This
rally and march is led by the Rev. Al Sharpton,
President of the National Action Network; along with

Luther King, III, President of The Center for
Nonviolent Social Change; TV

Host Warren Valentine among a host of others. So
let's get together on this special day to "Reclaim
the Dream" and keep the special memory of
Dr. King and his dreams alive. Please read the
official Press Release on this rally and march below!

Saturday,
August 28, 2010 | 11:00 a.m. | Dunbar High School | 1301 New
Jersey Avenue NW | Washington, DC | Rally and March to the King
Memorial
Forty-seven
years after the historic March on Washington, Reverend Al Sharpton,
President of National Action Network and leaders from his over 47
National Action Network chapters across the country, along with heads of
progressive organizations, unions and clergy, will lead a mass rally and
march in Washington, DC on Saturday, August 28, 2010 to RECLAIM THE
DREAM.
The
rally will start at 11:00 a.m. at Dunbar High School, followed by a
march to the King Memorial. Joining NAN will be a cross-section of
organizations and principals including, but not limited to: National
Action Network (NAN); United States Education Secretary, Arne Duncan,
Martin Luther King, III, President, Center for Nonviolent Social
Change, Inc.; Ed Schultz, Television and radio show host; Tom Joyner,
The Tom Joyner Morning Show & Reach Media; Marc Morial, President of
the National Urban League; Benjamin Todd Jealous, President of NAACP;
Melanie L. Campbell, President of National Coalition on Black
Civic Participation and Convener of the Black Women's Roundtable;
representatives from Media Matters, and many other religious groups,
labor unions, and organizations. While across town at the steps of
the Lincoln Memorial the conservative tea party members and TV host
Glenn Beck will attempt to hijack the dream, at the same time civil
rights activists will convene at Dunbar High School to shed light upon
key issues that have diminished the dream.
As we prepare to mark the 47th anniversary of his "I Have a
Dream" speech on this date, Glenn Beck and others are expected to
push for the expansion of states' rights - the exact antithesis of the
civil rights movement and Dr. King's legacy.
According
to Rev. Al Sharpton and NAN, when we study the intense struggle for
civil rights in this nation, we quickly - and rightfully - find
ourselves analyzing the life and legacy of the great Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. We learn of his tireless efforts to achieve equality and
justice for all of humanity, as we pass on legends of sit-ins, marches
and boycotts to our children. But what we as a collective sometimes
forget to impress upon the next generation is the depth to which Dr.
King was an advocate the position that the federal government as he knew
it was the only effective tool to ensure a unified system of equality in
every state.
Today,
the Tea Party and allied conservatives are trying to break that national
stance on justice and, in turn, break the crux of what the civil rights
movement symbolized and what Dr. King fought and literally died for. No
one day was more important than that day forty-seven years ago when we stood still and heard the dream eloquently spoken by Dr. King.
Event participants will Reclaim the Dream on Saturday, August 28th 2010

Greetings
from the front of Harmony and Love. Today's message
is entitled;
Thoughts
and Thinkers.
All battles
originate in thought, and is the conflict between
the observer and the observed. The observer and the
observed however, are the same. Separation comes
only through the action of the observer; and
therefore the observer (himself or herself) is the
action which divides life into the thing observed,
and someone separate from it.
There can
be no thought without a thinker, and no thinker
without a thought.
The two
therefore, are really one, but we must go beyond the
wall of time and memory, so that thoughts may come
to an end, and only in this action will thought
cease to breed division.
To
personalize this example let me use some of my
own experiences.
I must be
the peace that I want to experience.
I must be
the Love I want to receive.
I observe,
I label and I conclude.
I react, I
remember and I predict in order to support my
observation, based only on thought.
I can
observe. I can think differently. I can react from
compassion, I can forgive and see the humor of the
situation, thereby freeing myself from any negative
judgments.
I am the
observer and the observed.
I am the
cause of all my conflicts.
I am the
solution to all my problems.
I am the
means beyond thoughts, and beyond the creation of
conflict.
I am the
one who must observe how the observer is observing,
and learn to separate the threads of thought from
the tapestry of the past.
Only then
can I free myself from the accumulated memory of
past conditioning.
I am the
sole determinant of how I view my world, and I
exercise this freedom now to visualize a world of
Harmony, Peace and Love.
And So It
Is.
Hollis
Lashley,(c) 2010.

As
I close, I must tell you that we had a very lovely time at Six Flags in
Maryland last weekend.
We walked, and walked, and walked.
Of course, we enjoyed all the shows and sat looking at all the families
and little kiddies as they enjoyed the water park, and the entire park
overall.
Of course, Todd reminisced quite a lot about his years working at the
park when he was a youth. He pointed out, and shared with me all the
places he helped put together and beautify for the opening day of the park,
and shared some of his exciting stories and experiences [with his friends]
during that special time as they embarked on a new fun job at "Wild
World" now Six Flags a number of years ago.
Additionally, we talked and laughed about all the fun things he did to
entertain the kids during
his time there. Our annual day at Six Flags is always fun; and this year
was fantastic and fun-filled.
As
for last Sunday, the 1st Annual Caribbean Wine and Food Festival --
despite the rain, it was pleasurable.
We had a great time specifically enjoying the wines from Solomons
Island winery, and particularly enjoyed the Watermelon White Merlot Wine.
The entertainment too was good, as well as the Jerk Chicken [which
completely tempted us to try, and we did].
The rain indeed deterred many from attending; but those who were there,
I'm sure had a lovely time (as we did).
Congratulations to the Caribbean Entertainment Network for the lovely
day and great entertainment.
This
weekend its all about the family, and we are so happy for Cousin Apollo
as he gets himself ready to embark on Fatherhood. Todd oftentimes talk
about his baby cousin and smile when looks back on Apollo's
childhood. Funny how fast they grow up, because it seems like it was
just yesterday Apollo was a baby; and now he is about to become a
father. We look forward to spending time with Apollo and the
family, at Apollo's first baby shower.
