On-Line Family and Friends: Greetings
to all of you!
On
August 31st, 2010, Trinidad and Tobago
celebrate its 48th Independence, and what a
monumental Independence this will be for this lovely
country. In
addition to celebrating the struggles, as well as the
strength and
growth of a nation; they are celebration a fantastic and
historic time of progress due to the nomination of their
first woman Prime Minister – Mrs. Kamla
Persad-Bissessar.
As
I look at the struggles throughout history of my country
of birth [Trinidad], and reflect on how we as a people
broke the chains of bondage [first from slavery and
later from the British rule] in order to gain an
identity and fundamentally gain independence; INDEED I
AM PROUD ~~~ so very proud of our progress; economic
reforms; as well as growth in politics; growth in
education; growth in exciting and innovating technology;
growth and progress of the infrastructure
improvements/re-developments; and even the booming
development projects currently underway.
Hum…however;
during this monumental time I would be remiss if I do
not mention how disturbed I am regarding the country not
being able to govern and manage their own police force;
and most importantly dealing with their own crime and
social problems. You
see, approximately 400 years ago Trinidad like most of
the Caribbean islands, as well as America were
slave-holding colonies.
Slaves were brought to these shores in bondage,
chained to bottom of ships to work the land for the
profits and privileges of the slave holders; and they
were ruled and overseen without rights for many ~~~ many
years. After
hundreds of years of struggles these slaves and
indentured servants gained independence and
self-governance, and essentially gained a country to
finally call their own and to be proud of.
 Recently
though, Trinidad’s new Prime Minister Mrs.
Persad-Bissessar must have felt overwhelmed and unable
to find a solution to dealing with the crime that seems
to be rampant in her country, and she appointed a new
Commissioner of Police "CoP", and Deputy
Commissioner of Police both from Canada: Mr. Dwayne
Gibbs, “CoP” and Mr. Jack Ewartski Deputy "CoP",
[Plus 2 other gentlemen were appointed Deputy CoPs as
well]
The
huge problem I clearly see here is the "CoP"
and the Deputy "CoP" salaries are far ~~~ far
higher than other members of the force; they are being
paid 3 times the amount of the wages the local holders
of these same positions are/were being paid.
Most disturbingly, these two gentleman are not of
color and don’t look anything like the population of
Trinidad and Tobago [Which is made up of largely
Indians and blacks; and the percentage of whites is
probably less than 1%.]
Therefore, this could be a huge problem; in fact
they [most likely] are not familiar, and do not
understand the customs and culture of this island [which
of course is far different from Canada and even the U.S.]
Unquestionably, part of being a good Police
Officer is understanding the needs and problems of the
community.
Personally,
I see this as a step backward in self-governance.
And pardon me when I say: it seems as though
the "overseers" are back.
Sure, I absolutely agree crime is bad in this
little country, but when compared to most urban cities
in the US [of its same size] the crime rate is
comparable. And
I strongly feel the answer IS NOT TO BRING someone from
the outside who clearly doesn’t look like the people,
and who possibly does not understand the culture to
police the country.
I feel perhaps if the current police
officials/officers [who are already in the job] are
properly trained and moderately compensated; this will
positively weed out the corrupt, and create a motivated
and effective team of officers who will work to their
fullest regarding successfully and effectively PROTECT
and SERVE the citizens of this country, which WILL
without a doubt reduce crime drastically.
Surely, this doesn’t require someone from the
outside.
I
somehow feel this may be the inauguration of oppression
all over again. Today
it’s the Commissioner of Police and the Deputy
Commissioner of Police, and tomorrow I question who it
may be. Perhaps, this is just part of the plan, right?
Hum, actually maybe it is the beginning of the
new world order in the Caribbean...LOL!!!
In
actuality, the sad thing to me is that most people we
(Todd and I) have spoken to - feel it may be for the
best. Therefore,
who am I to complain? ~~~ Maybe it is for the
best! ~~~ Maybe
these are the nicest or most competent gentlemen in the
world, [since I truly don’t know them or anything
much about them]. But just from looking at these gentlemen in their eyes [to
be exact,] I don’t have a good feeling about the
entire situation. It
just doesn’t feel right; REALLY and TRULY it feels
like a step backward (as I stated above.)
And for me this celebration of INDEPENDENCE ~~~
this 48th year ~~~ actually, the rhetoric of
freedom and librations of independence this year - 2010
~~~ UNFORTUNATELY DOESN'T RING TRUE TO ME!!!!!
I
really would like to hear your opinions on this issue,
because it is very disturbing. Kindly e-mail me at
ariousentetrtainment@earthlink.net
or/and susan@ariousentertainment.us.
I
close my thoughts on the above topic by saying:
HAPPY
48th INDEPENDENCE TRINIDAD AND
TOBAGO,
 LET
EVERY CREED AND RACE FIND AN EQUAL PLACE AND
MAY
GOD BLESS OUR NATION!
I
also leave with you the following quote by Daniel
Webster:
“May
the sun in his course visit no land more free,
more happy, more lovely than this our own country.”
Yes,
my own country – Trinidad and Tobago!!!!
Additionally,
I must thank my husband Todd Mangatal for his input
regarding the many discussions, some research, and his
assistance in the conveying of this important issue.
Luther King, III, President of The Center for
Nonviolent Social Change; TV
and Radio Host Joe Madison; Radio Host Tom Joiner; Radio
Host Warren Valentine among a host of others. So
let's get together on this special day to "Reclaim
the Dream" and keep the special memory of
Dr. King and his dreams alive. The rally and march
will begin at Dunbar High School, 1301 New Jersey Ave
NW, Washington, DC 20001. and will end at Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr.'s Memorial (which is currently
Saturday,
August 28, 2010 | 11:00 a.m. | Dunbar High School | 1301 New
Jersey Avenue NW | Washington, DC | Rally and March to the King
Memorial
Forty-seven
years after the historic March on Washington, Reverend Al Sharpton,
President of National Action Network and leaders from his over 47
National Action Network chapters across the country, along with heads of
progressive organizations, unions and clergy, will lead a mass rally and
march in Washington, DC on Saturday, August 28, 2010 to RECLAIM THE
DREAM.
The
rally will start at 11:00 a.m. at Dunbar High School, followed by a
march to the King Memorial. Joining NAN will be a cross-section of
organizations and principals including, but not limited to: National
Action Network (NAN); United States Education Secretary, Arne Duncan,
Martin Luther King, III, President, Center for Nonviolent Social
Change, Inc.; Ed Schultz, Television and radio show host; Tom Joyner,
The Tom Joyner Morning Show & Reach Media; Marc Morial, President of
the National Urban League; Benjamin Todd Jealous, President of NAACP;
Melanie L. Campbell, President of National Coalition on Black
Civic Participation and Convener of the Black Women's Roundtable;
representatives from Media Matters, and many other religious groups,
labor unions, and organizations. While across town at the steps of
the Lincoln Memorial the conservative tea party members and TV host
Glenn Beck will attempt to hijack the dream, at the same time civil
rights activists will convene at Dunbar High School to shed light upon
key issues that have diminished the dream.
As we prepare to mark the 47th anniversary of his "I Have a
Dream" speech on this date, Glenn Beck and others are expected to
push for the expansion of states' rights - the exact antithesis of the
civil rights movement and Dr. King's legacy.
According
to Rev. Al Sharpton and NAN, when we study the intense struggle for
civil rights in this nation, we quickly - and rightfully - find
ourselves analyzing the life and legacy of the great Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. We learn of his tireless efforts to achieve equality and
justice for all of humanity, as we pass on legends of sit-ins, marches
and boycotts to our children. But what we as a collective sometimes
forget to impress upon the next generation is the depth to which Dr.
King was an advocate the position that the federal government as he knew
it was the only effective tool to ensure a unified system of equality in
every state.
Today,
the Tea Party and allied conservatives are trying to break that national
stance on justice and, in turn, break the crux of what the civil rights
movement symbolized and what Dr. King fought and literally died for. No
one day was more important than that day forty-seven years ago when we stood still and heard the dream eloquently spoken by Dr. King.
Event participants will Reclaim the Dream on Saturday, August 28th 2010
Hello Arious
Family, and here's to wishing you all the best that you
are capable of having. Today I share with you a lesson
from one of my mentors, Dr. Robert Anthony. Read,
Understand and Do.
Most of
us have been taught to follow the crowd. We
subscribe to
"tribal" thinking, which is the thinking of the
masses. It is not
easy to break from this type of thinking, or non-thinking.
A lot
of people find this a huge stumbling block because they
believe
what social, political, religious and other authority
figures have
told them is "true".
There is
a lot of fear tied up in leaving the tribe. However, you
will never experience true freedom or riches unless you
learn to
think for yourself. But to do this, you must be
capable of
critical thought - which is something the members of the
tribe
cannot do.
Put
another way - most people don't know how to think.
They have
been told WHAT to think for so long, they no longer know
HOW to
think. What's the lesson for you?
I'm
convinced that true freedom and riches requires you to
think
contrary to what the tribe is thinking. And it
ALWAYS requires you
to question the beliefs you hold. On everything.
This is not easy
because we are addicted to certainty.
We
would rather be certain about our beliefs than face the
fact
that what we believe may not be "true".
But the more you question
what the tribe believes the more you will realize that
they are
hypnotized. You don't have to wait for them to wake up
from the
trance. You can do it right now!
Today
will bring you a new awareness, a lesson or a
manifestation
that you are making progress - IF YOU LOOK FOR IT!
No matter how
large or small, please record it in your Evidence
Journal. It will
only take a few moments and will AUTOMATICALLY put you
in the Flow.
Truly
Caring for Your Success!
Dr.
Robert Anthony (c).
