The Islands of Trinidad and TobagoHappy Republic Day Trinidad and Tobago!

The Anniversary of Trinidad and Tobago's Declaration of Republic Status (Republic Day) was celebrated on Thursday, September 24, 2009.

Republic [noun]: A state or nation in which the Supreme Power rests in all the citizens entitled to vote (the electorate), and is exercised by representatives elected, directly or indirectly, by them, and responsible to them. (Courtesy of Webster Dictionary)

Trinidad and Tobago for many years was a monarchy, but the islands became Republic on August 1st, 1976, after it was decided that they should no longer be required to owe allegiance to the Queen of England, and that their should be a Head of State in its own right.

This event is celebrated as a public holiday every year on September 24th, because this is the date the first Parliament met under the new Republican Constitution.  The date was removed from the official Calendar of Holidays from 1999 to 2001 to make way for the Spiritual Baptist (Shouter) Liberation Day holiday.  The Republic Day holiday was reinstated in 2002.

"To bring about such a meaningful and independent status, the conversion of the former Constitution from its character as an Order of Council of the Queen into that of an indigenous instrument of government fashioned by citizens of T&T, was effected by the Parliament enacting the Constitution of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Act, 1976.  The constitution provides for a President who, in the exercise of his functions under the Constitution or any other law, acts in accordance with the advice of the Cabinet or a minister acting under the general authority of the Cabinet where provision is made by the Constitution."

I was a young adult in Trinidad when I last experienced the Republic Day Celebrations.  From my recollection though, it was just another holiday...A day to be off school, full of food and drinks.  Of course, there was a parade, but back then there were no fireworks display.  From my understanding the holiday now is still celebrated with parades, fireworks, special concerts, good food, and endless drinks.

Below is this years' address be the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago - Professor George Maxwell Richards TC, CMT, Ph.D (2003-Present).

President of the Republic of Triniidad & Tobago-George Maxell RichardsAddress to the Nation by His Excellency Professor George Maxwell Richards TC, CMT, Ph. D, President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, on the Occasion of Republic Day, Thursday 24th September, 2009

Fellow Citizens

At the outset, let me wish you all a happy Republic Day, 2009. These greetings go also, to the Diaspora and to all who have adopted our beloved country as their own.

This Republic Day comes at a time when convulsions are taking place, all over the world. And we have not been spared. While the world-wide economic downturn has not, so far, impacted us, as severely as it has other countries, we must maintain caution, lest our decisions, in this regard, move us into crisis, even as there are indications that the situation is easing, in other parts of the world.

Our cushion against fallout from international developments, which inevitably affect us, is not merely the presence of what may be regarded as adequate reserves, of money or natural resources. It goes beyond, for example, to policy decisions that ensure responsible fiscal arrangements, for the purpose of maintaining a healthy economic climate which is essential to our future development. I have no doubt that we are capable of doing what is right.

In the current circumstances, we have been able, thus far, to stave off the worst results of the economic upheavals that hover and I am persuaded that this is not happening by chance. It flows from the fact that, over the years, we have acquired expertise which has enabled us to be in a position to manage our resources, in such a way, that we could keep on the path of development.

This is a part of the continuing process of education required for consolidating our independent status, as we chart our course and, in this process, we must be ever mindful of the quality of person that we produce quality, defined not only in academic terms or in terms of skills. Our schools and homes have nurtured many excellent sons and daughters, who, by their diligence in their respective fields of endeavour, have achieved positive results for Trinidad and Tobago, over the years, at home and abroad...

How about our President Barack Obama, wasn't he fantastic on David Letterman's Late Show?  So very articulate, cool, confident,  intellectual and intelligent.  See his responses to all of David Letterman's questions.  Click on the picture below to see the show and listen closely to his response to Letterman's question regarding Former President Jimmy Carter's controversial statement  "I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he's African American...").   President Obama is so politically correct and smart! (Video Courtesy of CBS - 31min. 56sec.).  Please feel free to share your comments with me on this interview. susan@ariousentertainment.us

We want to thank so many of you for the interesting and thought provoking comments you sent us regarding my thoughts about the "crazy criticisms, controversies and disrespect against/towards President Barack Obama." that I shared with you last week via our weekly E-Newsletter.  My intention was to share them with you, but we received quite a few and I have not had a chance to fully go through them.  However, a friend who is also one of our On-Line Family (Yolanda-Blondie who resides in Florida) sent an interesting article and suggested we share it with all of you.  CLICK HERE TO READ!  After reading please send your thoughts susan@riousentertainment.us.

I also received a lot of e-mails from people stating that we all must continue saying a Prayer for President Obama...Pray that he is kept safe always, as well as his family.  Pray that all the nonsense, foolishness and hatefulness against him STOPS!

I am eager to hear your thoughts on all I wrote above, so I look forward to having you share them with me: susan@ariousentertainment.us

Lately it seems there is nothing fun to do in our area anymore...nothing exciting.  So, we find ourselves in front of the computer during all of our free time doing something or another.  I guess we have to look into creating something fun to do soon.  Nevertheless,  last weekend we decided to get out of the house to socialize a bit, and attend a few events around town, which turned out to be quite nice (especially SekouFlex 3rd Anniversary celebration).   We were so looking forward to doing the same thing this weekend, but unfortunately there is really nothing happening in our area.   I guess we will have to chill as we always do.  If you hear of anything fun taking place in the DMV area send us the information.

I mentioned last week I received information from Erica Williams-Connell (The late Prime Minister of Trinidad Dr. Eric Williams daughter) regarding the biennial "Eric Williams 'School Bags' Essay Competition.  Please read all the details about this competition by clicking the link below where I have indicated.

"You, the children, yours is the great responsibility to educate your parents, teach them to live together in harmony....To your tender and loving hands, the future of the Nation is entrusted.  In your innocent hearts, the pride of the Nation is enshrined.  On your scholastic development, the salvation of the Nation is dependent....you carry the future of Trinidad and Tobago in your school bags."

This "Eric Williams 'School Bags' Essay Competition is sponsored by The Eric Williams Memorial Collection (EWMC) at The University of the West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago.  The contest is being offered to all final year Sixth Form students (or equivalent) in the former and current British-colonized Caribbean countries: Anguilla, Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Turks and Caicos.  It will be held from September 2009 through January 31, 2010. Winners will be announced on April 30, 2010.    PLEASE CLICK HERE TO READ ALL ABOUT THIS COMPETITION AND FOR THE DETAILS!

We would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Jerome Henry -  President of PMCCA/Philadelphia Multi Cultural Carnival Association, whom we lost last week.  Funeral Services we held on Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas in Philadelphia.  Donations are being accepted for his family as well as the trust fund established for his young children - TO DONATE CONTACT THE IBIS at 215-878-8420.
