Republic Day Trinidad and Tobago!
Anniversary of Trinidad and Tobago's Declaration of
Republic Status (Republic Day) was celebrated on
Thursday, September 24, 2009.

Parliament met under the new Republican
Constitution. The date was removed from the
official Calendar of Holidays from 1999 to 2001 to make
way for the Spiritual Baptist (Shouter) Liberation Day
holiday. The Republic Day holiday was reinstated

was a young adult in Trinidad when I last experienced
the Republic Day Celebrations. From my
recollection though, it was just another holiday...A day
to be off school, full of food and drinks. Of
course, there was a parade, but back then there were no
fireworks display. From my understanding the
holiday now is still celebrated with parades, fireworks,
special concerts, good food, and endless drinks.

is this years' address be the President of the Republic
of Trinidad and Tobago - Professor George
Maxwell Richards TC,
CMT, Ph.D (2003-Present).
to the Nation by His Excellency Professor
George Maxwell Richards TC, CMT, Ph. D,
President of the Republic of Trinidad and
Tobago, on the Occasion of Republic Day,
Thursday 24th September, 2009
At the outset, let me wish you all a
happy Republic Day, 2009. These greetings go
also, to the Diaspora and to all who have
adopted our beloved country as their own.
This Republic Day comes at a time when
convulsions are taking place, all over the
world. And we have not been spared. While
the world-wide economic downturn has not, so
far, impacted us, as severely as it has
other countries, we must maintain caution,
lest our decisions, in this regard, move us
into crisis, even as there are indications
that the situation is easing, in other parts
of the world.
Our cushion against fallout from
international developments, which inevitably
affect us, is not merely the presence of
what may be regarded as adequate reserves,
of money or natural resources. It goes
beyond, for example, to policy decisions
that ensure responsible fiscal arrangements,
for the purpose of maintaining a healthy
economic climate which is essential to our
future development. I have no doubt that we
are capable of doing what is right.
In the current circumstances, we have
been able, thus far, to stave off the worst
results of the economic upheavals that hover
and I am persuaded that this is not
happening by chance. It flows from the fact
that, over the years, we have acquired
expertise which has enabled us to be in a
position to manage our resources, in such a
way, that we could keep on the path of
This is a part of the continuing
process of education required for
consolidating our independent status, as we
chart our course and, in this process, we
must be ever mindful of the quality of
person that we produce – quality, defined
not only in academic terms or in terms of
skills. Our schools and homes have nurtured
many excellent sons and daughters, who, by
their diligence in their respective fields
of endeavour, have achieved positive results
for Trinidad and Tobago, over the years, at
home and abroad...

our area anymore...nothing
exciting. So, we find ourselves
in front of the computer during all of

there is really nothing happening in
