WHAT'S HAPPENING by Todd Mangatal

Greetings To all, my on-line family:

This week was horrible for many of our families and friends in the islands.  Hurricane Ivan slammed many of the islands and many have lost their homes.  We understand that it was the most powerful hurricane to hit Grenada in nearly a decade, damaging 90 percent of its homes, and killing at least 20 people.  Before slamming Grenada Tuesday evening with winds of more than 120 mph, Ivan pummeled Barbados and St. Vincent, damaging hundreds of homes and cutting utilities.  According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami, the storm was threatening to cross right over Jamaica by Friday morning, or Saturday hitting it "head on", and then Cuba.  Read more details below from MSNBC.!

We at Arious would like to send our sentiments to everyone in the islands, and to those here in Washington and the US who are worried about their families and friends.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you!!!!

On Tuesday, Ivan damaged 221 homes in Barbados and left many residents without water and electricity, the Caribbean disaster agency said. The agency received reports of one death in Barbados, but could not confirm it was hurricane-related. Power was being restored Wednesday.

In neighboring St. Vincent and the Grenadines, more than 1,000 people were in shelters, 19 homes were destroyed by storm surges in coastal areas, and another 40 homes were damaged, the agency reported. It said the country remained without electricity Wednesday.

A half-dozen houses in St. Lucia and two schools in Tobago lost their roofs. In Tobago, officials reported a 32-year-old pregnant woman died Tuesday when a 40-foot palm tree fell into her home, pinning her to her bed.

Trinidad was spared, but many oil plants on the coastline were evacuated.  Additionally, Trinidad is preparing to send two ships with relief supplies and troops to help rebuild Grenada.

In Venezuela, a 32-year-old man died after battering waves engulfed a kiosk on the northern coast.

MSNBC

As you are aware, Hurricane Frances slammed the Bahamas and once again devastated many parts of Florida and Georgia, where approximately 14 people were killed.  Many folks lost everything.  In the past day we here in the DC/Maryland area got hit with the last of Frances, and it passed through still with vengeance.  Many tornadoes touched down, and of course many homes were destroyed.  We are still experiencing flooding.  Thank God no lives were lost here.  Please keep all who are suffering from this devastation, and those who may be affected from these storms in your thoughts and prayers.  At times like this it's our duty as humans to help, therefore our friends at Caribbean Connection in conjunction with Zanzibar on the Waterfront and us (Arious Entertainment) have organized a Relief Effort.  Check the message below for more information on how you can help!

 Caribbean Connections

Disaster Relief Drive

We, the members of Caribbean Connections would like to take this time to extend our heartfelt sympathies to the people of Grenada, Barbados, Jamaica and all the Islands that are affected by this storm.

We feel that with coordinated efforts we will survive another one of mother nature's blows.

Caribbean Connection in association with Zanzibar on the Waterfront and Arious Entertainment have began a relief drive on behalf of the Islands.

Potential 24 Hour Caribbean Internet Radio

We made it to New York Carnival just in time for J'Ouvert, and despite the cold weather, people came out in large numbers, and had lots of fun.  We would like to congratulate DC Pan Jammers on their successful first appearance in the J'Ouvert.  It was clear everyone was proud of this new DC band, because the support from the DC/MD folks was outstanding at J'Ouvert.  As usual we enjoyed New York!

Soca Invasion Hits DC this Sunday

This weekend don't forget Princess Monique from St. Vincent and King Ajamu from Grenada will be in town for the DC Soca Invasion.  They will be joined by many other artists.  This will take place on Sunday, September 12th, at the Mirage Hall in Silver Spring, Maryland.  Click here for more details, or scroll down to view the ad.

Before we close, we would like to leave you with a word of warning,.  Due to a friend being "jacked" at gun point at a local nightclub, we want I stress to folks to be alert and careful.   PLEASE BE ALERT OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS, AND OF THE PEOPLE IN YOUR SURROUNDINGS, and always watch your back.  Most importantly, if you witness a crime in progress don't look the other way, make sure you get as much information as possible, and be sure to call the police immediately!!!! (Everyone has a cell phone nowadays).  That one phone call could save many lives.  This is the only way we can help stop these crimes.  It's really sad when things that you normally see on the news, such as people getting shot, people getting robbed at gun point, children stealing cars, and killing innocent people are happening to people you know, and even yourself.  We've really got a big problem.  What are we going to do?  Who's committing these crimes...our children!  This is sad beyond words!!!!
