Dearest On-Line Family and Friends:  Special Greetings To All Of You!!!

AutumnleavesHarvestSeason.JPG (35104 bytes)Hey family:  Can you believe already the first day of Autumn has come and gone [one day ago-Sept. 23, 2010]?  [Sighing] It's the beginning of shorter daylights…right?  Since my husband Todd spends most of his days in the country [while traveling through the Maryland mountains to get to his destination] he has told me the beautiful fall foliage and harvest season has begun.  Yup, the leaves are certainly changing, and are slowly falling off the trees!  As I ponder about the change, I can’t help but frown and moan about the influx of the weird prehistoric looking and annoying “Stink Bugs” that are flying all around our homes and everywhere.  Most annoyingly, those hideous “Sting Bugs” are boldly invading our homes as well.  Ugh…OMG, I hate the sight of those awful looking little creatures, and wish they would go away as quickly as they seemed to have arrived, because they are totally repulsive and truly “grosses me out”.  What’s even worst is nothing kills them, and from my research there is really no known insecticide that WILL kill them.  [Although, I read recently that Dawn Dishwashing liquid mixed with water will get the job done, as well as Joy Dishwashing liquid.  As a matter of fact, we have tried Ajax dishwashing liquid mixed with water and it worked very well.  The ugly buggers keeled over and died after squirting and completely saturating their prehistoric revolting insect bodies with the mixture.]

Stink Bugs: Halyomorpha halys (Stål), the "Brown Marmorated Stink Bug," was accidentally introduced into Allentown, PA around 1996 from China or Japan.

The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug feeds on a wide range of fruits, vegetables, and other host plants beginning in late May/early June including peaches, apples, green beans, soybeans, cherry, raspberries, and pears. Damage to host plants from the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug is typically small necrotic areas but ranges from leaf stippling, catfacing on tree fruits, seed loss, and transmission of plant pathogens.

During the summer the stink bug produces offspring that survive the winter as adults by entering houses. They enter houses through cracks in windows and the foundation and may be seen in large numbers during September and October. Due to the noxious odor produced as a defense mechanism, the stink bug causes a nuisance to homeowners. Since its introduction into Pennsylvania, it has established itself as a potential risk to agriculture as well as a nuisance to homeowners and has been steadily spreading throughout the eastern United States.

Ops, sorry for deviating a bit; but as I continue pondering I can’t help but whine about what I most hate concerning the change of season.  Which is the dreadful cold weather that is steadfastly approaching.  I am never ready for it, nor am I looking forward to it.  How about you?

Recently I read some interesting statements from a fine author/writer - Ms. Cathy Lynn Pagano regarding the arrival of this harvest season, which she successfully compared to what she calls “our personal harvests.”  Her statement makes quite a bit of sense, and which on a personal level somewhat touched my soul; especially since this week I experienced some of what she stated.  Please read Ms. Pagano’s statements below (courtesy of Op Ed News - http://www.opednews.com), and let me know your thoughts.

"With the arrival of the harvest season, this year 2010 comes to its maturity. We have choices to make, about our personal harvests and about our world, and the cycle of the year demands that we make those choices with our eyes wide open and our hearts filled with a passion for life. That passion for life will get us through the Winter to come.  Take the time to acknowledge your harvest for this year and offer gratitude for the many gifts, as well as tests, that this year has brought you."

Yes, positively the turning of the “Wheel of the Year” is upon us again, and for many of us the turning of the “Wheel in our life” is here as well; and our energies are absolutely about to shift!

Well, on a personal note regarding this new season; the crisp nights have begun and we have happily been spending them at home sipping on wine and fruit.  For me though, I have found myself preparing some of the nicest, authentic Caribbean dishes.  Actually, due to it being a bit nippy at the beginning of this past week, I was proud of the awesome traditional Caribbean soup I prepared.  Wow, me cooking???  I too am very shocked; and I must admit it wasn’t bad, and I actually enjoyed it for a change.  I guess fall will be a cozy one at home chilling and enjoying our pet, our surroundings, and each other’s company with some nice home cooked healthy authentic Caribbean meals.

Hum, as I bring my thoughts to a close regarding this new season, I ask the same question I have been asking all year long.  "Why are the days and months flying by so quickly?"  Actually, our family and Associates who reside in other states have confirmed THAT IT’S NOT ONLY US, they too think 2010 is drastically flying by.

Enjoy the beginning of this lovely season friends and family.

As I vibe here with you, I find my mind drifting on Reggae Superstar and four-time Grammy nominee - Mr. Mark Anthony Myrie aka “Buju Banton," whose Federal case began on Monday, Sept. 20th, 2010.  Mr. Myrie is charged with conspiring to buy cocaine from an undercover police officer about a year ago.  Actually, the charges read:  Conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine and aiding two others in possessing a firearm during the course of cocaine distribution.

I understand the jury adjourned without a verdict on Sept. 23rd, but will reconvene on the morning of Sept. 24th.  Gosh, from what I have been reading some days ago: prosecution provided potentially damning evidence of the reggae star discussing drug deals and footage of him tasting cocaine.  During the trial "Buju's" Defense Attorney David Markus argued that while "Buju" talked with a government informer about drugs, he never went through with the deal.  However, the U.S. Assistant Attorney James Preston said "Buju" was a middle man in a drug transaction in which an associate of "Buju" would buy five kilos of cocaine from an undercover police officer.

What’s most worrisome is: if "Buju" is to be found guilty he will face a possible life sentence, and therefore I am seriously worried about this case.  The only good news I heard was that even though Buju’s co-defendants pleaded guilty, neither testified in his trial this week.

I truly have mixed feelings about this case and have voiced it on other forums.  You see, as much as I love the artist "Buju B" I am very disappointed with him regarding this serious problem, {which I will share my thoughts in more detail after his verdict is announced.}  "Buju" is forever in my prayers because he is absolutely a great talent.  Please kindly keep Buju in your prayers especially during this grave and solemn time of tribulation .

For those of you on the East Coast, I must share with you that a few Caribbean plays are on tour in the U.S., and will be coming to your area within the month of October.  The first play “The Plumber” will kick off in Boston on October 2nd.  It then travels to Hartford, Connecticut on October 3rd); Brooklyn, New York on October 9th; and in Queens, New York on October 10th.  It then travels to Washington, DC on October 16th, and on the 17th in East Orange, New Jersey.  The Plumber” is presented by promoters “Irish and Chin”.  Please read about “The Plumber” below and plan on attending this exciting play in your city.  For the Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia area folks; please see the flyer for the Washington Show under our  ”Featured Events section below.

"Jamaica's hit play "The Plumber" comes to the United States.  Audiences will surely be blown over by "The Plumber" as the play's gripping story line leaves audiences anticipating what will happen from scene to scene when the issue of marriage, infidelity and paternity are brought to light.  These issues ring true with audiences worldwide and invariably they become so drawn into the action that they forget that it's just a play and not real life.  Contributing to that is the outstanding performance of the talented ensemble cast including Andrea "Delcita" Wright, hailed as Jamaica's "Queen of Comedy," Garfield "Bad Boy Trevor" Reid, Michael "Stringbeans" Nicholson, Stede "Jooky Jim" Flash, Belinda Reid and Trudy Bell.  Written by Paul O. Beale and Directed by Paul O. Beale and Stede "Jooky Jam" Flash.  "The Plumber" follows in the great tradition of comedic history mounted by Stages Productions.

After 20 years in the Police Force, crime fighting is beginning to take its toll on Detective Jones (Garfield Reid) and by extension on his marriage.  His wife Janet (Belinda Reid) is as frustrated with his lack of attention both inside and outside of his bedroom, and as John continues to fail to stand-up to his responsibilities, she seeks solace in an old flame Andre (Michael Nicholson).  This is however more than a love triangle, as Andre is now married to Janet's only child Cindy (Trudy Bell).  Matters become even more complicated when John invites his son Stamma (Stede Flash) up from the country to live with him and he takes along his sweetheart Delcita (Andrea Wright).  As the story twists and turns, Delcita always finds herself in the middle, creating more pressure on the Joneses as they struggle to keep their marriage afloat."

The Washington DC show is being brought to you by Irish and Chin, along with Queenstown, Tarzan, Ms. Divalicious and Lady Ray.  You certainly cannot miss this exciting play, so get your tickets now!

Additionally, our favorite Jamaican comedian Oliver Samuel with his play “Puppy Love” will be in Washington DC on October 23rd“Puppy Love” is a romantic-comedy family play and one of the best Caribbean theatrical productions in years. “Puppy Love” has been sold out wherever performances are held including Guyana and Toronto and an extra week has been added to the UK tour.  More details about this play is forthcoming, so please stay tuned!!!

As I close my commentary this week, I must take the time to thank many of you for the interesting comments you forwarded to me regarding my last week’s commentary that focused on Former Mayor of DC Mr. Adrian Fenty.  In fact, some of my colleagues engaged me in some interesting conversations about this topic and I think it is appropriate to share some of them with you.

These colleagues were thrilled that Mr. Fenty lost the primary election, and of course I needed to know why.

  1. A mature professional woman who lives in Northwest, Washington DC - Ward 4 commenting on my statement that Mr. Fenty did a lot, specifically regarding the re-development projects across the city, etc.  She stated: “You wrote about all he did, trust me he did nothing for “US”!  Nothing was done for “US” in the East of Rock Creek park nor East of the Anacostia River.”  She further explained: "I loved Mr. Fenty too, but he stopped listening to “US ~ THE PEOPLE and just became very arrogant."  She shared the fact that she witnessed during the campaign for the Primary Election all of Mr. Fenty’s political signs being placed on many of the citizens front yards (including hers), with none for the [presumptive] newly elected Mayor Mr. Vincent Gray' and was thrilled when she saw Mr. Gray’s political signs popping up all over her Ward and across Washington DC.  She strongly feels Mr. Gray will be good for the city and will be good to the citizens of Washington DC.

  2. Another resident of Washington DC a gentleman who resides in the Southeast area questioned my statement about Mr. Fenty reforming the entire school system.  He explained: “Maybe Adrian had good intentions…yeah, I think he was doing some good for the schools, but I don’t understand why he felt he needed to fire all the teachers, and in such a horrible and disrespectful manner.  This gentleman had lots more to say, and shared some of the rumors that surfaced about Mr. Fenty’s personal life, which is not very appropriate to share.

  3. Finally, another colleague – a professional woman who is a resident of Northeast Wash. DC; and who was married to a former member of the District of Columbia City Council.  This intelligent woman shared her special knowledge of Mr. Fenty.  She stated: “I don’t trust Mr. Fenty, and has not trusted him for some years now.”  She further explained: “See...I have special knowledge of a disturbing issue that Mr. Fenty had been involved in…Yup, he took advantage of an elderly person some years ago.  In fact, he was supposed to have helped this elderly woman with a financial matter, but instead he deceived her, which resulted in the loss of this woman’s funds.  Basically, he swindled her out of her money.”  My colleague seemed very upset about this particular issue.  As we spent more time talking about Mr. Fenty, she shared some other interesting issues, which sadly I simply cannot share.

I am not sure if you are surprised as I am about these negative comments about Mr. Fenty, because I have so much respect for him.  However,  I do understand fully NOW why he lost the primary election, and how actual citizens of Washington DC feel about him.  It’s clear the love for him left some years ago, which in my opinion is very unfortunate, AS I still strongly feel he has done a lot for Washington DC!!!

"The Preacher"
Now, I don't believe in the devil,
But I know that all words can teach,
So this night a friend invited me
To listen to this minister preach.
He started with humor, a bit laid back,
Then he outlined the lesson with care,
He was wet at the end of the sermon,
The church standing, some shedding a tear.
The lesson he gave was of Jesus
Being chosen, anointed and baptized,
Being led in the wilderness by Spirit;
Satan hoping he could be capsized.
There are four lessons here he reminded.
And the first is that when you are blessed;
There are those who will try every evil
To divert you from doing your best.
But prayer, he reminded the people,
is the way to respond at this time,
And Victory cannot be prevented
When Spirits' presence is sublime.
The next thing he said as we listened,
is that we are attacked when alone,
our thoughts and our actions deceive us.
being tempted to make Bread from Stone.
The third point was that when you are fasting
From the physical and dangerous acts,
when you're cleaning yourself from negation,
that's the time that the devil attacks.
Just when you begin something worthy,
and embark on a course of Mans good;
That's when all hell will try to prevent you,
from reaping good fruits as you should.
And he spoke of the flesh and the Spirit,
and the battles that we have to win.
The spiritual weapons and triumph,
which will conquer the weakness within.
So my friends, if you are being tempted;
Know that already the battle is won,
for the Savior is within your stronghold;
Your Divinity blazes as the Sun (Son?).
Harmony, Peace, Love!
Hollis P. Lashley (c) 2010
