RELEASE Prepared
by Carlton Joseph and Fred Thornhill The Mighty Sparrow (Slinger Francisco) had to be assisted off stage during a performance at “Kaiso on the Greens” in Maryland on Saturday July 24, 2010. The Mighty Sparrow suffered an acute attack of right groin pain while performing. Doctors Patricia Sandiford, Jacinta Arrington and Roger Weir administered emergency care. After he was stabilized, Sparrow was transported by ambulance to Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, Maryland. Sparrow was diagnosed with an incarcerated right inguinal hernia, which was reduced within 6-8 hours. Dr. Patricia Sandiford, formerly of Bertrand
Street, San Fernando, and his son, Anthony,
accompanied Sparrow to the Hospital where he was admitted.
They remained with him overnight.
On Sunday July 25, 2010 Sparrow underwent emergency surgery, which was performed by Dr. George Conrad. He tolerated the procedure well and was in stable condition immediately after surgery. The Mighty Sparrow, along with Kurt Allen and
Brown Boy and backed by the Troubadours were in Maryland to perform at
“Kaiso on the Greens” in Silver Springs, on Saturday night. Sparrow began his performance by joking about
the latest rumor and singing two verses of “Sparrow dead”. It was a more subdued Sparrow who performed from a seated
position center stage. Although
he appeared to be physically weak and less than his normally active
on-stage self, his humor was there and the voice strong and unmistakably
Sparrow. He had
the appreciative patrons on their feet dancing, waving and singing
along. Nearing the end of an outstanding performance,
which was vintage Sparrow from a seated position, what began as an
almost unnoticed occasional clutching of his lower right side became a
painful grimace, which brought his performance and the show to a
premature end. Sparrow
had to be assisted off stage and taken into the house. A stunned and visibly shaken crowd waited for
news of his condition and wondered if what it was witnessing was the
fulfillment of what was to date only a rumor. But Doctors Patricia Sandiford, Jacinta
Arrington and Roger Weir who were attending the show promptly
administered emergency care to Sparrow on the premises before he
was rushed by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Dr. George Conrad performed successful emergency surgery on the
following day. After
surgery Sparrow looking and sounding as his old self jokingly declared
when questioned about his ordeal, “The only thing is,
I aint dead yet. Halajuela.” Kurt Allen and Brown Boy had earlier thrilled the audience with their performances. Brown Boy opened the show and had the crowd asking for more of his “Dreaming”. Kurt Allen gave a sterling performance and captured the audience with his “Foxes”. Sparrow was released from hospital on Monday
July 26, 2010 and is recuperating at a private home in Silver Spring,
Maryland. He is expected to
make a quick and full recovery. July 26, 2010 -
