NATIONALS IN THE UNITED STATES CATCH INAUGRATION FEVER Washington
D.C – The 2009 Presidential inaugural events are expected to draw record-breaking
crowds to the nation’s capitol. On January 20th Barack
Obama will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United
States and later that same day his official motorcade will parade down
Washington’s Pennsylvania Avenue for the whole world to see. But two days prior, on Jan 18th Georgia Avenue
will come alive with inauguration fever as Caribbean nationals from
across the global community stage their celebration with a distinctive
Caribbean flavor. Putting
the program together is a team of Washington D.C based cultural
producers which include Trevor and Jennifer Selman, Learie Bruce, Neil
Cruickshank, *** Earl Noel and Victor Selman. Heading the team is Trevor
Selman a well-known cultural ambassador from Trinidad & Tobago who
has been at the vanguard of Caribbean entertainment promotions in North
America for more than 20 years. Selman
and wife Jennifer, owners of Crown Bakery, were early supporters of
Barack Obama’s campaign long before he was the presumptive Democratic
nominee. Eager to be a part of the process, the Selmans staged several
fundraisers at their popular eatery and encouraged others to do the
same. Now
with the historic victory of Obama as the first African American
president of the United States they have joined forces with other
business owners -- Noel Enterprises and Entertainment Circles Promotions
-- to produce what is billed as an Obama
Socarama. “Caribbean
people all over the United States had our stake in the election of
Barack Obama as president,” says Selman. “We did not sit this one
out but we were on to frontlines. We raised funds, we knocked on doors,
we volunteered all in an effort to ensure that the promise of democracy
will be preserved not just in our lifetime but our children. So now, we
deserve to celebrate just as much as everyone else and we are doing so
in the way that represents us as a people.”
And
a grand celebration it will be on Jan. 18 with a superstar cast of
Caribbean entertainers taking part. Among them are: King David Rudder,
Queen of Soca Alison Hinds, The Sweet Soca Man Baron, former junior
Calypso Monarch of Trinidad & Tobago Kerwin Du Bois and St. Vincent
and the Grenadines former Road March King, Jamesy P. The opening acts
are two young upcoming artists Dolla and Jeremy who will all be backed
by the Sunshine Band out of New York. The
show takes place at the former Chevrolet building located at 5929
Georgia Ave NW Washington DC from 9:00 p.m. — 5:00 a.m. and is
expected to attract upwards of 3,000 celebrants. The
official week long inauguration celebration has been themed: Renewing
America’s Promise, a vision that underscores President-elect
Obama’s commitment to restoring opportunities for all Americans. It is
one that resonates with Caribbean nationals domicile in America who
continues to be living realities of the proverbial American Dream and
engineers of the change that has come to America. For
